Nursery at Welford Primary School

Purposeful play gives Welford's nursery its shape: children follow some activities led by adults and make their own choices in others. This is the school's own nursery class in Handsworth, Birmingham, for children aged 3 to 4. Capacity is expressed as 60 full-time-equivalent places, rather than a headcount of children attending each session.
Part-time provision sits alongside full-time places. For families, that makes the attendance pattern a separate decision from choosing the nursery itself.
Development Matters guides learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent language, the curriculum brings together talking and listening, movement, relationships and emotions, early literacy and maths, creative expression and exploration of the world. These areas are taught through planned play, with both adult direction and activities children initiate themselves. Children therefore have opportunities to pursue their interests alongside experiences chosen by staff.
The emphasis extends beyond early academic skills. Ofsted's inspection on 18 and 19 March 2025 described a positive start across early years, including learning in reading, maths and writing, with correct letter formation as one example. That finding covers early years collectively.
Small responsibilities also matter. Early-years children willingly took on jobs, including sounding a bell when it was time to put things away. Such a task gives children an active role in classroom routines, alongside the skills they practise in their learning.
A nursery teacher and support staff sit within the EYFS team. For additional needs, the school's SEND framework covers communication, learning, emotional and social needs, and physical or sensory needs. Families can contact the SENCo through the school office, giving them a route to discuss support for their child.
Family support has a physical base: the Community room on Broughton Road. The pastoral manager works with the safeguarding lead to support families, while activities include ESOL, crochet and ICT. This gives parents opportunities to meet other families and develop skills themselves.
Food also needs a place in family budgeting. Nursery dinners feature in the school's meal-charge schedule dated April 2024; contact the school for current charges.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. It also confers no priority under the admissions criteria listed by the school: looked-after or previously looked-after children come first, followed by qualifying siblings, then children living closest.
Families must make a separate Reception application through Birmingham City Council. The deadline listed for the 2026 application cycle was 15 January 2026 at 11:59 pm, which has passed. Treat the nursery place and the later school application as two separate decisions, with the relevant Reception deadline in your calendar.
Part-time places are offered to all children, while the full-time route includes an eligibility check linked to 30 hours of free childcare. Eligibility therefore matters when planning the longer attendance pattern.
Nursery registration forms can be collected at the school office or downloaded. Return the completed form to the main office with a child's birth certificate or passport and proof of address. Enquiries go to 0121 464 9228 or enquiry@welford.bham.sch.uk.
For emergency closures, the school sends a text to the primary contact and directs families to its website and Class Dojo. Keep the office's contact number for you up to date so those messages reach the right person.
