Play, conversation and growing independence shape Westminster’s early years approach. The nursery belongs to Westminster Primary School on Stamford Road in Handsworth, Birmingham, placing it within a school setting rather than a separate childcare provision. Its curriculum combines activities chosen by children with teaching directed by adults. Both have a place in the day.
The school aims to develop confidence alongside learning, with speaking, listening and emotional development given particular attention. For parents, that means an approach concerned with how children communicate and manage themselves as well as their first steps in literacy and mathematics.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings play and focused learning together here. Children have time to investigate through practical experiences, while adults lead group activities and check what they understand. The emphasis is on exploration, sustained involvement and thinking through ideas: children are encouraged to try things, remain engaged and work out solutions.
Communication, early literacy and mathematics sit alongside personal, social and emotional development. The early years timetable includes focused teaching in phonics, literacy and maths, balanced with opportunities for children to pursue their own interests. This gives the day a mixture of adult guidance and choice rather than a single style of activity throughout.
Learning extends beyond the classroom to outdoor experiences, educational trips and contributions from visiting specialists. These give children something concrete to investigate and discuss. Adults use observations to plan subsequent learning, alongside conversations with children and consideration of their work. Teaching can then respond to what a child understands and what needs further attention.
Relationships are part of the early years approach. Staff work closely with children and use observation to shape individual support, with the aim of helping them feel secure enough to build confidence. The nursery staffing structure includes teaching and teaching assistant roles, within an early years team led by an EYFS lead.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), Westminster describes support that can include changes to activities, targeted help and specialist involvement. Teachers, parents and specialists contribute to identifying needs. Families are treated as partners in learning, consulted and kept informed, giving parents a role in discussing the support their child receives.
There is also a practical point of contact for families beyond classroom discussions. SEND Coffee mornings provide guidance about support for children with additional needs, while Parents’ Coffee mornings include contact with a parent support advisor. These sessions take place in the Gloria Wallen Hall on the school site and are open to parents and carers.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer priority under Westminster’s admission criteria. Families must make a separate Reception application through Birmingham City Council. Applications usually begin in October and close in January; check the council’s exact dates for the relevant intake.
Transition and allocation are separate matters. Westminster describes communication and collaboration between Nursery and Reception as its approach to supporting the move. Familiarity with the school does not replace the Reception application.
Nursery enquiries go directly to the school office on 0121 464 2369. Families can also contact the school to arrange a visit. This gives prospective parents a direct route to discuss joining the nursery.
The school is on Stamford Road, Handsworth, Birmingham, B20 3PN. Keep the nursery enquiry and the later council Reception application as two separate steps in your family’s planning.
