At a Glance

Shared early years leadership gives Wychall’s nursery its place within the school: a teacher holds the Early Years Phase Leader role across nursery and Reception, alongside a nursery and Reception lead. This is school nursery provision in Northfield, Birmingham, on Middle Field Road.

The Nursery Day

Brick towers and a pretend farm shop bring early learning into practical play. In February 2025, children across Wychall’s early years provision explored problems together, used their building to practise adding or taking away one, and played at shopping. These activities connect number work with things children can handle and situations they can act out.

Adults helped children put their ideas into clear speech. That matters alongside the counting: play gives children something to talk about, while adult support helps them explain what they mean. The early years finding was that children began their learning well; it applies to the early years provision collectively.

Wychall’s early years aims combine activities directed by adults with play initiated by children. Communication, movement and social development sit alongside early reading and writing, maths, creative work and learning about the world. In parent terms, the intention is to develop both learning skills and independence through practical exploration, with children’s interests helping shape the activities.

Care and Support

For additional needs, parents can speak with the class teacher or SENDCo. The school works with speech and language therapists, educational psychologists and the school nurse when specialist input is needed. This gives families a route from a classroom concern to advice tailored to their child, rather than leaving them to coordinate support alone.

Support can include WellComm for speech and language, work on physical coordination and wellbeing check-ins. These are possible interventions, selected according to need. Children on the SEND register have their support reviewed three times a year with parents involved, so provision can change as their needs develop.

Physical care has specific facilities within the school: a medical room for administering medication, plus accessible toilets equipped with a hoist and an intimate-care bed. These are school facilities, rather than nursery-only spaces, and provide practical support for children whose care requires equipment.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no admission priority. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority’s coordinated process, following its normal admissions timetable. For Birmingham applicants, the route is Birmingham Primary School Admissions.

Oversubscription priorities are looked-after and previously looked-after children, then siblings, then proximity to school. An EHCP naming the school establishes admission separately. Families should therefore treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as distinct decisions.

Transition support is a separate matter. Staff share information about children, and additional plans can include a transition book or a social story with classroom and teacher photographs. For children with SEND, that can make the next setting more familiar while helping support continue.
