Nursery at Wyndcliffe Primary School

Language, reading and number give Wyndcliffe’s nursery its educational character. Provision for three- and four-year-olds sits within the school’s early years foundation stage (EYFS), based in the Oaks building. Nursery capacity is 39 full-time-equivalent places, a measure of provision rather than the number of children attending a particular session.
Ofsted judged early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 9 and 10 July 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. For parents, the useful detail is the emphasis on communication and the foundations of reading and mathematics.
Monday to Wednesday is the nursery’s attendance pattern, with a typical week totalling 19 hours and 30 minutes. A morning break runs from 10:15am to 10:30am, followed by lunchtime between 11:30am and 12:30pm. The nursery finishes at 3:05pm. This concentrates attendance into the first part of the week, an important fit question for family routines.
Within the EYFS, the learning priorities have a practical meaning: developing children’s language, introducing reading from the start and building their understanding of number. In July 2024, communication and language received a strong emphasis, while early mathematics prioritised number understanding and fluency. These are foundations children can draw on as their learning develops.
Oaks places nursery within the school’s early years accommodation. Across the school, classroom visual timetables and First and Then boards provide a visible sequence for activities, helping children understand what happens next.
For children joining the school ahead of a September start, introductory sessions take place during the latter half of the summer term. Parents meet the staff team and discuss medical needs, learning needs and concerns. This gives families an opportunity to share information before their child begins. Children joining during a term are also encouraged to visit beforehand.
SEND support starts with a conversation with the class teacher. Concerns are passed to the Inclusion Manager, with a meeting and initial assessment used to decide the next steps. Support can include adapted classroom teaching, a small group intervention or individual help for a defined period. Specialist referrals may follow when needed.
Parents contribute to decisions and reviews. For children on the SEND register, formal reviews take place each term; children with communication difficulties can have a home-link book recording activities to discuss together. The practical benefit is continuity between learning at school and conversations at home.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives priority. Families must make a separate application through Birmingham City Council’s online school admissions route. For September 2027 entry, the closing date is 15 January 2027.
Treat this as a separate decision and deadline, even if your child is already settled at Wyndcliffe. Familiarity with the school does not change the requirement to apply again.
Nursery applications go directly to the school, with entry in the school year after a child’s third birthday. Enquiries can be made by calling 0121 464 4241 or emailing enquiry@wps.leightrust.co.uk.
The Monday-to-Wednesday pattern is the key practical consideration: families need arrangements that work around a 3:05pm finish and attendance concentrated into those days.
