Outdoor counting games gave Yew Tree’s combined Nursery and Reception provision a practical learning focus at the November 2022 inspection. The nursery belongs to Yew Tree Community School on Yew Tree Road in Aston, Birmingham. It forms part of the school’s early years provision, so this is a start within a school community.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 November 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately graded nursery. The nursery-specific picture centres on staff knowing children, learning planned around their needs and children becoming comfortable with routines.
Outdoor play has a practical role in learning. In November 2022, groups of children played games that developed counting and number writing. These activities brought early mathematics into play, giving children something to do together while practising number skills. The outdoor learning space matters for that reason: it is somewhere learning happens, rather than simply a break from it.
Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), the evidenced emphasis is on learning, play and familiar routines. In November 2022, children adapted promptly to expectations and played alongside one another happily. Learning was planned to suit children’s needs, and they made a positive start. For parents, the useful combination is purposeful activity and practice in being part of a group. Both help children prepare for their next stage.
Settling begins with adults understanding the child. In November 2022, staff knew children closely and passed transition information to parents; children became settled promptly and began learning successfully. Sharing that information helps parents understand the move into early years.
Across Yew Tree, support for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) uses an Assess – Plan – Do – Review cycle. Needs are identified, individual targets agreed, support put into practice and progress revisited. Parents can discuss concerns with the SEND coordinator through a telephone conversation or a meeting arranged through the office.
Family involvement also includes meetings with teaching and support staff, parents’ evenings and workshops. Parents participate in individual education plans and education, health and care plans, including annual reviews. Education and health professionals work with staff and families on assessment, advice and targeted support. These are school-wide arrangements, providing a route for discussing a nursery child’s needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat that application as a distinct task when planning the next stage.
The November 2022 early years findings linked carefully planned learning with preparation for children’s next stage. That preparation concerns children’s learning and readiness; it does not secure admission.
The school office can be reached on 0121 464 2967. Yew Tree’s address is Yew Tree Road, Aston, Birmingham, B6 6RX. For a concern about additional needs, the office can arrange contact with the SEND coordinator, giving families a direct route to a discussion.
No. Nursery and Reception admission are separate, and families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process.
