At a Glance

Mixed-age learning gives Woodland’s nursery its distinctive shape. In April 2024, the early years children shared a class with Key Stage 1 pupils, bringing the youngest learners into the school’s everyday teaching structure. This is nursery provision within Woodland Primary School in Bishop Auckland.

Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 17 and 18 April 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

Children have opportunities to choose their own play alongside activities directed by adults. The indoor and outdoor learning spaces support both, with children’s interests helping to shape their exploration. Planning accounts for different ages within the mixed-age classes, so the shared setting does not mean identical tasks for everyone.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning to communicate, move and manage relationships with early reading, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. Woodland’s partnership curriculum also emphasises independence and confidence. These are practical foundations for joining in, making choices and learning alongside other children.

In April 2024, adult-directed activities helped children progress, and early years children were making a positive start with letter sounds. Play needed greater precision. Some activities had unclear learning aims, leaving opportunities to build on children’s knowledge unused. For parents, the balance between purposeful adult input and learning through play is the key point to consider.

Class floor books record learning and help staff plan subsequent activities. These records are shared with families, whose contributions are welcomed, connecting children’s experiences at home with their learning in the setting.

Care and Support

Settling was a strength in April 2024: early years children became comfortable quickly and developed their ability to socialise. The partnership arranges introductory visits for children and parents, with additional visits possible for children with SEND. Familiarity with staff and surroundings can therefore develop before the new routine begins.

Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher, who involves the special educational needs coordinator when further support is needed. Support Plans set individual goals and strategies, with targeted help delivered individually or in small groups. Families take part in planning and reviewing that support.

Chartwells supplies school meals, including nursery meals, which carry a charge. Families dealing with allergies or intolerances can contact its medical diet nutrition team. Before children start, the school collects information about dietary needs, allergies and health requirements, giving families a clear opportunity to explain care needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process; the school directs parents to Durham County Council for primary admissions. Keep that application separate from any nursery arrangements.

Familiarity and admission are different questions. The partnership’s transition programme includes visits with parents and extra visits for children with SEND. Staff also liaise with a child’s previous setting about interests, abilities and needs. These arrangements support adjustment to school life rather than securing a place.

Practical Information

Contact Woodland’s school office on 01388 718271 or email woodland@durhamlearning.net for enquiries. The school timetable includes a breakfast club and after-school care.

Woodland’s school colours are red and white, with dark skirts, pinafores, trousers or shorts. Plain sweatshirts and polo shirts are accepted alongside embroidered versions supplied through Motif8. Clothing should be labelled with the child’s name.

FAQs

Early years provision was graded Good at the inspection on 17 and 18 April 2024. Adult-directed learning supported progress, but some play activities needed clearer learning aims.

The EYFS curriculum combines activities chosen by children with learning directed by adults, using indoor and outdoor spaces. Staff record learning in class floor books and share these with families.

The partnership arranges transition visits for children and parents. Additional visits can be arranged for children with SEND, and staff liaise with previous settings where appropriate.
