Schools in Bishop Auckland

A market town of around 16,000 shaped by episcopal governance and coal for much of its history, Bishop Auckland sits at the confluence of the River Wear and the River Gaunless in County Durham. Auckland Castle dominates the historic centre. Once a hunting lodge for the Bishops of Durham, it became their principal residence and defines the town's ecclesiastical character, which predates the Industrial Revolution by centuries.

Coal mining transformed the town through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawing workers to estates such as Woodhouse Close, which today draws families competing for primary places, alongside the more rural pockets of Evenwood and Wolsingham further into the Durham countryside. South Church and Toft Hill extend the residential spread westward, and Northern Trains services from Bishop Auckland station link to Darlington, with onward connections to Durham and Newcastle.
