Individual learning journeys shape Corpus Christi’s pre-school: adults plan activities around each child’s needs and decide what to work on next. The provision opened in September 2025 and takes children from the term following their second birthday up to age four. It is the pre-school attached to Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School in Boscombe, Bournemouth.
The staffing structure connects pre-school with the early years foundation stage (EYFS). It includes a joint pre-school and EYFS lead, a pre-school lead higher level teaching assistant (HLTA), and EYFS teaching assistants. For families, this identifies the roles involved in planning learning and providing everyday care.
Learning starts with getting to know the child. Activities are planned and assessed against individual needs and next steps, rather than described as one fixed path for the whole group. The emphasis combines early learning with social development and emotional preparation for school: learning to relate to others matters alongside learning new things.
Kindness has practical expression here. Children are encouraged to share, care for others and respect their surroundings. Those expectations give parents a picture of the social habits adults aim to build during play and other activities. Curiosity and an interest in learning are also explicit aims of the pre-school’s approach.
Tapestry gives that learning a record. Staff add observations to an online journal for each child, tracking progress and letting parents see pre-school activities. Its value for families is the connection between what children do during a session and what parents can follow at home.
Adults work together to care for children, with individual needs informing their planning. The emphasis on knowing each child makes personal development part of the approach, rather than treating readiness for school solely as an academic task.
At the September 2025 opening, hour-long Stay & Play sessions were arranged on 4 and 5 September, with staff answering family questions afterwards. These were introductory events for that opening cycle.
Communication also uses Google Classroom. Children receive a school account and classroom access, where teachers share home information and learning updates. Alongside Tapestry’s observations, this gives families a digital route for following learning and receiving messages.
Attending the pre-school does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat that application as a distinct step in your child’s school planning.
The pre-school’s work on social skills and emotional preparation concerns children’s readiness for school. It should be understood separately from the allocation of a Reception place.
Sessions run during term time, Monday to Friday. Families can choose an all-day session from 8.45am to 2.45pm or a morning session from 8.45am to 11.45am. An afternoon-only option is also offered. The choice lets families select a shorter session or the full pre-school day.
