Small classes, a sensory garden and communication through pictures, signs and speech give Linwood’s nursery provision its character. It belongs to a specialist school, with early years based at Littlewood Campus in Poole, within a separate wing of Oakdale Junior School. Littlewood serves children aged 3 to 8; that is the campus age range, rather than a nursery-only intake.
Classes at Littlewood contain 6 to 8 children, supported by a high ratio of staff. This makes the size of the teaching group a useful consideration for families whose children need substantial individual support. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 28 to 29 January 2025. That judgement covers early years within Linwood School.
Communication is woven into learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage pathway uses Development Matters to assess development, covering language, movement, emotional and social development, creativity, understanding the world, and early reading and mathematics. For parents, the emphasis is on building these foundations at the child’s developmental stage.
Linwood’s Total Communication approach combines methods suited to each learner. Objects of Reference help children anticipate routines, while the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) gives them a way to request or respond using cards. These methods make participation possible through more than spoken language. In January 2025, early years children listened closely to stories and learned school routines very well.
Littlewood has four classrooms: two downstairs provide autism-specific environments, and two upstairs accommodate other additional needs alongside autism. A softplay area and a shared room used for PE add indoor options. Outside, two substantial spaces and the sensory garden give children different settings for activity.
A road-safety event in March 2025 shows how learning can become practical play. During Beep Beep! Day, children rehearsed crossing on playground road markings, washed cars and made prints with paint. An Attention Autism activity used falling powder paint to represent traffic lights. Safety messages were explored through movement, attention and play, rather than spoken instructions alone.
Settling-in sessions form part of the early years experience. Alongside the small teaching groups, families have several ways to stay involved: Evidence for Learning shares achievements through an online journal, and parents’ evenings provide contact with the teaching team. Annual reviews consider the child’s education, health and care plan.
Communication support includes an NHS speech and language therapy team working across Linwood. Classroom strategies are available universally, with targeted and specialist input according to need; referrals require parental or guardian consent. In January 2025, personalised support helped early years children manage their emotional responses. That matters for participation as well as comfort.
Meals at Littlewood come through Oakdale Junior School, with lunches ordered directly through the host school. The Family Support Team works with parents across every Linwood campus, offering advice and practical help. Parents can also report safeguarding concerns through the school’s concern form or safeguarding email address.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Reception admission is a separate process, requiring a further application through the applicable route and within its deadline. Familiarity with Linwood’s staff and routines should therefore be kept separate from the question of admission.
For families already considering specialist provision, Linwood’s visit invitation is conditional on the child having an education, health and care plan and specialist placement having been agreed. A visit is an opportunity to consider the provision and the child’s needs; it should not be read as an offer of a Reception place.
Littlewood’s school day runs from 9:10am to 3:00pm, with an hour for lunch and recreation. Transport requires an application to the local authority. Families meeting the school’s visit conditions can contact Littlewood on 01202 830845 or email littlewoodcampus@linwood.bournemouth.sch.uk.
Uniform applies from Nursery onwards. The Always Active Uniform approach prioritises clothing suitable for activity, and families can discuss alternatives with the Curriculum Lead where sensory or physical needs affect clothing choices. Littlewood’s address is School Lane, Poole, BH15 3JR.
