Stories, conversation and practical play give the nursery its character, with Cherry and Pear for older nursery children and Saplings and Seedlings for two-year-olds. The main nursery welcomes children from the term after their third birthday until the move to Reception. Both provisions are based in the Kennion Building on Kennion Street, Bradford, BD5 0NF, so families need the early years site when planning their journey.
Communication is a clear thread. The two-year-old provision opened in September 2024, primarily to address speech and language needs. At the June 2025 inspection, adults helped children understand brief phrases and put names to objects, enabling them to join activities and express themselves.
Play combines children's own choices with activities guided by adults. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives the curriculum its shape: learning to communicate, manage feelings, build relationships and develop physical skills takes priority in Nursery. Early maths, literacy, creative work and understanding the world build on those foundations. Children learn through practical activities, with opportunities to explore independently and with adult guidance.
Books and listening have specific routines. Children hear poems and stories, join action rhymes and practise hearing spoken sounds blend into words. Nursery focus texts work on a two-year rotation, with connections to other learning. Picture books also go home for an adult or older sibling to read aloud, extending the conversation beyond the classroom. Maths has similarly practical examples: drawing circles, sorting baubles and singing 5 Little Monkeys.
Saplings and Seedlings have indoor and outdoor areas of their own, equipped for their age and development. Their daily routine includes a seated snack, nursery rhymes and a story. Older nursery children also explore and investigate indoors and outdoors. In June 2025, early years children were walking to the local hospital café each week, using an everyday outing to build confidence.
Adult conversation is part of the learning, with Nursery interactions intended to expand vocabulary and help children communicate. Additional needs can be discussed with the class teacher or Inclusion Team; a meeting can lead to a support plan and, where needed, external advice. The school has a speech and language therapist, while specialist spaces on both sites include a sensory room, a quieter teaching space and a soft space.
For children with SEND starting school without previous experience of an educational setting, settling support includes visits to Nursery or Reception, a home visit and an intended planning meeting with parents. A phased start may be arranged where appropriate and necessary. For children with SEND, transition support is tailored to their individual needs.
Lunches are prepared on site, with halal and vegetarian choices for children who need them. Nursery children receive milk free of charge. Packed lunches must contain cold food, exclude sweets and chocolate, and follow the school's ban on nuts and nut products.
Separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery applications are handled by the school, while Bradford Council arranges Reception admissions. Families must apply again through that route by the normal deadline.
For children with SEND moving between classes, current and receiving teachers exchange information and agree new targets. Children can spend transition days with their next teacher and class during the latter half of the summer term. Familiarity supports the change of classroom; it does not secure admission.
