In the eastern foothills of the Pennines, Bradford grew across the 19th century from a cluster of textile villages into one of the Industrial Revolution's great boomtowns, its worsted mills drawing workers from across Britain and beyond to become the world's leading wool-trading city. Granted a municipal borough charter in 1847 and city status in 1897, the city produced grand Victorian and Italianate civic buildings that still define the centre, including the elaborate Italianate city hall. Little Horton is among Bradford's most school-competitive corners for primary catchments, while Undercliffe draws families to the northern residential slopes above the centre. Barkerend and Manningham form the inner residential belt flanking the city centre, with Apperley Bridge extending the district northward towards the Leeds boundary. Bradford Interchange connects the city to Leeds. The wider West Yorkshire Metro rail and bus network links outlying neighbourhoods across the district. Around 352,000 people live in the city itself, within a metropolitan borough of nearly 547,000 at the 2021 census.
