Language, purposeful activities and growing independence give Atlas's early years its character. The nursery belongs to Atlas Community Primary School in Manningham, Bradford, on Lincoln Close. It forms part of a primary school whose age range begins at three.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 29 and 30 April 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Predictable routines provide the framework for learning. In April 2025, early years staff placed a clear emphasis on developing language, alongside ambitious expectations across learning. For a young child, the combination makes communication part of the day's learning rather than an isolated exercise.
Activities have a deliberate learning purpose, and adults use their interactions with children effectively. The early years foundation stage here brings together planned learning, discovery and support from staff. Children showed curiosity and confidence in April 2025. The emphasis is on helping them become active learners.
Both indoor and outdoor learning spaces support children's independence. These environments were effective in helping children learn in April 2025, giving the nursery day a broader setting than the classroom alone. The early years team includes a teacher with responsibility for early reading and phonics, alongside an Early Years Practitioner. That connects the youngest children's learning with staff responsibilities for language and reading.
Getting familiar with people is part of the school's joining arrangements. After an offer, families are encouraged to bring their child into their new class to spend time with the teacher and other children. This gives a child some familiarity before starting full time.
For additional needs, the class teacher and SENDCo are the first points of contact. The school's support system uses provision plans developed with parents and reviewed each term, so families can contribute to targets and discuss progress. Speech and Language Therapy referrals involve consultation with parents; support can include Makaton and objects of reference for children at an early stage of communication.
There is an important school-wide caution. In April 2025, individual SEND targets and classroom adaptations were not consistently aligned, limiting learning for some pupils. Families whose child needs additional support should discuss how agreed targets will translate into daily activities.
Medical care plans are developed with parents and reviewed yearly or when needed. Parents discuss allergies with the kitchen manager at the start of each year. Where required, dieticians can help develop individual diet plans, with this arrangement recurring termly when menus change. These school arrangements give families a route to explain care and dietary needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The Admissions Team at Bradford Council handles annual Reception allocations; contact the team for the application route. Treat the Reception application as a separate task from joining nursery.
The school office handles enquiries on 01274 495190 or at atlas@priestley.academy. Guided school tours can be arranged by telephone, giving families an opportunity to meet the school before making a decision.
For a child with additional needs, an appointment with the SENDCo can also be arranged through the office. Raise concerns initially with the class teacher; a joint discussion with the SENDCo can follow where needed.
