Purposeful play gives Barkerend’s nursery its character. Children practise early number and literacy skills while exploring their own ideas, interests and surroundings. This is the nursery within Barkerend Primary Leadership Academy in Bradford, with learning planned by the school’s early years team. The emphasis is on developing independence alongside the beginnings of classroom learning.
Play has a learning purpose here. Nursery experiences are matched to children’s interests and needs, giving them opportunities to test ideas, develop self-control and understand why rules matter. Creative thinking and doing things independently are encouraged. For parents, that means early learning includes how children approach a task, as well as what they learn from it.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven areas of development. Speaking and listening, movement, and managing feelings and relationships sit alongside early reading and writing, number work, exploring the world, and creative expression. Activities within that framework include role-play, dance and music, exploring materials, counting and investigating shapes. These connect learning with things young children can do and explore.
Adults observe children regularly and use those observations to shape subsequent learning. In June 2025, Ofsted found that language development ran through early years activities: adults demonstrated careful speech and asked questions that helped children extend their thinking and express themselves confidently. Independence and curiosity also received close attention. These findings cover the school’s early years provision, which includes the nursery.
Class teachers provide the first contact between families and the academy, updating parents about difficulties affecting learning. Pastoral support also involves team leaders and support workers. The school’s pastoral team includes three Learning Mentors, an Attendance Officer and a Pastoral Support Worker, giving families several staff roles through which concerns can be addressed.
For worries about a child’s emotional wellbeing, parents can speak with the class teacher or Inclusion Team. Safeguarding arrangements include checks on adults who work regularly on site, supervision of visitors and recurring child protection training for staff. A designated safeguarding lead supports colleagues and works with children’s social care services.
Food supplied by the academy meets national nutrition standards. That provides a clear basis for the food it serves, rather than a promise about any particular nursery meal.
Separate admission. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process; choosing nursery should not be treated as securing the next school place.
The early years team plans learning across nursery and Reception. That curricular connection is distinct from the decision about admission.
