At a Glance

Wormeries, growing vegetables and daily opportunities to paint give Byron’s early years provision a practical character. This is nursery learning built around doing things. Children can join the nursery aged three at Byron Primary School on Barkerend Road in Bradford, with separate morning and afternoon sessions.

Play shapes the approach: children choose some activities themselves, while adults guide others. The nursery sits within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), where Byron aims to help children become independent and build positive relationships with adults and other children.

The Nursery Day

Each session lasts from 8.30am to 11.30am or from 12.10pm to 3.10pm, Monday to Friday. Within the EYFS, children spend time learning independently, alongside other children and in groups guided by adults. Planning responds to their interests and needs, giving their own questions a place in the learning.

The EYFS brings together language, movement, relationships, early reading and maths, creative work and exploration of the world. In parent terms, learning stretches beyond letters and numbers. Children have daily opportunities to draw, paint and make things with different materials; music also forms part of everyday EYFS activities. Nursery history begins with vocabulary and ideas about the order in which things happen.

Outside, the early years environment includes a pond, a wet area and a garden for growing seasonal produce. Children investigate small creatures and their habitats, observe seasonal changes and care for plants. Classroom wormeries and bird feeders give them living things to look after, making exploration something they can return to over time.

Cookery adds another practical strand. Mixing ingredients and seeing what heating or cooling does to them introduces change through direct experience. Books help introduce science topics and the language children need to discuss them. Beyond the session, nursery children can use Byron’s Library with an accompanying adult, giving families a shared reading opportunity.

Care and Support

Parents are encouraged to share information with the early years team and take an active part in their child’s learning. Staff record observations in individual learning journeys and use these to decide what to plan next. That connects activities to what children are already doing and learning.

For additional needs, Byron uses a cycle of planning, putting support into practice and reviewing it. The Bradford Matrix of Need guides its SEND approach, linking children’s needs with possible strategies and interventions. This gives families a structure for discussing support as needs develop.

Food arrangements across the school include halal, nut-free meals and a vegetarian choice. Dietary requirements related to allergies, intolerances, religion or ethical beliefs are handled through a special diets form returned to school. Food allergies must also be reported to the Pupil Health and Welfare Officer.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Byron’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through Bradford’s coordinated admissions scheme. Treat that application as a distinct step, even if your child already attends nursery.

The application period usually extends from mid-October to mid-January. Check Bradford Council’s exact deadline for the relevant intake and submit the Reception application through the normal route. A nursery application made directly to Byron does not replace this process.

Practical Information

The morning and afternoon nursery sessions both run Monday to Friday. Their different finishing times matter for collection and for fitting nursery around family routines.
