Rhymes, conversation and the first marks on paper give Carrwood’s nursery provision its character. Blossom Nursery sits within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage, alongside a separate provision for two-year-olds called Petals. These are distinct teams, rather than a single nursery group with one staffing structure.
Blossom has a class teacher supported by teaching assistants, including a Level 3 teaching assistant and an apprentice. Petals has a manager, a child care practitioner and a teaching assistant. For parents, that distinction matters: the youngest children’s provision has its own team, while Blossom has a teacher-led structure.
Language runs through the early years curriculum. Adults support speaking and listening through conversation, while children encounter poetry, stories, rhymes and non-fiction. The school aims to expand children’s vocabulary through everyday exchanges and encourage longer sentences. That makes talk part of learning itself, rather than something reserved for a separate lesson.
Books have a daily place. Teachers read to their classes each day, and Nursery children begin developing awareness of phonics within the school’s Read Write Inc approach. This is an introduction to the sounds used in reading. It should not be confused with a claim that Nursery children follow the daily phonics timetable used later in school.
Early writing starts physically. In both Petals and Nursery, children have opportunities to develop larger movements before finer hand control, with mark making forming a foundation for writing. The emphasis is on preparing children to make and control marks, rather than treating early writing simply as producing finished words.
Mathematics has a flexible sequence of 24 blocks. Children can enter the progression at different points, with timing adjusted to their development and to different nursery intakes. This gives the learning sequence room to respond to a child’s starting point. Each class also has a library from which children choose a book to take home for enjoyment, linking the classroom’s reading culture with family life.
Weekly Rhyme time sessions invite Nursery parents and carers into school. They give families a concrete way to join the language activities that children experience, with rhymes providing a shared focus for adults and children.
Support also sits within a wider school team. There is a special educational needs coordinator, alongside pastoral roles covering learning mentoring, behaviour and inclusion. These are useful points of contact for families discussing additional needs; they are not a description of an individual child’s support package.
A separate application matters. Attending Carrwood’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and obtaining a school place as separate decisions.
