Spoken language gives Princeville’s early years provision its clearest character: adults demonstrate speech and introduce vocabulary, helping children develop the communication skills they need to join in learning. Provision for two-year-olds sits on the school site at Willowfield Street, Bradford.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 June 2024; this covers the school’s early years rather than a separately graded nursery. For the 2027–28 admissions cycle, the nursery caters for ages 2 to 5, with 20 full-time-equivalent places for two-year-olds and 40 for three-year-olds. These are capacity measures, rather than a count of children attending each session.
Communication is a substantial part of the early learning here. In June 2024, children across early years, including the youngest provision, were doing well, with adults helping them extend their vocabulary. For a young child, that means learning involves developing the words to express themselves as well as taking part in activities.
Discovery RE brings stories and practical experiences into the Foundation Stage curriculum. Books, videos and religious objects introduce different faiths, while role play and tasting food from different cultures give children concrete ways to explore them. Themes include Special People and Special Places, connecting learning with people and places that matter to children themselves.
Skills Builder is the school’s careers programme. Its early years activity, Job roles and gender, uses pretend play to introduce occupations. The school aims to show children that jobs are open to anyone, making this an early exploration of possibilities through play.
Settling into familiar routines was a strength of early years in June 2024: staff helped newcomers adjust promptly. That matters for children beginning their first experience of school, when understanding what happens next is part of feeling settled.
Across the academy, SEND support includes a Pupil Passport developed with families, children and staff, bringing individual support strategies together and receiving a review each term. The school uses a cycle of assessment, planning, action and review to respond to needs. For families, this provides a structured way to contribute knowledge of their child and revisit support.
Physical access includes a lift within the school’s multi-level building, wheelchair-accessible doors and accessible toilets. Parents can raise safeguarding concerns directly with the safeguarding team through the main office.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must submit a separate application through Bradford Local Authority’s normal admissions process. For the 2027–28 cycle, nursery attendance carries no oversubscription priority, so choosing the nursery and applying for Reception remain separate decisions.
At the June 2024 inspection, transition support included a summer reading pack for children moving into Reception. This gives families something practical to use during the change of stage; it does not affect admission.
Princeville provides 15 hours of free nursery education each week. Additional attendance beyond that entitlement attracts a session charge, with exemptions including financial hardship. Contact the school for current charges.
For 2027–28, attendance is generally arranged across part of the day or week, and the school aims to accommodate families’ preferred sessions. Nursery admissions are handled by the school itself.
