Learning begins with language at Denholme: even choosing where to sit becomes a chance to understand position and practise vocabulary. This is the nursery within Denholme Primary School, on Minorca Mount in Bradford, with applications starting at age three. It offers an introduction to school life before families make their separate Reception application.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection of 15 to 16 November 2023. The nursery’s character is clearest in the small teaching moments: adults turn everyday exchanges into learning, alongside the school’s named approach to early reading.
Speaking and listening have a practical purpose here. In November 2023, nursery adults demonstrated positional vocabulary by inviting children to sit opposite or beside them. That connects a new word to something a child can actually do, rather than leaving it as an abstract instruction.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised provides the phonics approach, beginning in Nursery/Reception. Children build their understanding of how letters represent sounds, supporting reading and spelling as they progress. For parents, this gives early reading a recognisable programme rather than a collection of unrelated activities.
Practical work also has a place. In November 2023, opportunities to handle materials and develop techniques extended from Nursery through the school. This gives children ways to learn through making as well as talking. Each class also had an allotment for growing vegetables to use at school, connecting a physical growing space with a useful end product.
Settling starts before the first nursery session. Once a place has been allocated, families have both a visit at home and a nursery visit arranged. Children are also invited to free Stay and Play sessions ahead of starting. Those opportunities give families and children some familiarity with the setting before attendance begins.
For children staying for a school meal, the daily choice includes one cold option alongside three hot dishes. Menus are shared ahead of time, allowing parent and child to choose together. The kitchen can accommodate most special dietary requirements when families tell the school about them; that qualifier matters when planning meals for a child with dietary needs.
Families can discuss additional needs or progress with the SENCO through the school office. The wider school uses symbols, visual prompts and timetables to support communication. Its specialist provision, The Orchard, has a separate Bradford SEND allocation process: applying for a mainstream place does not provide access to it.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor confers priority under the admission criteria. Families must make another application through Bradford’s coordinated school admissions scheme. Treat that as a separate decision and application, even when your child already attends nursery.
The application window usually extends from mid-October to mid-January. Families should check Bradford council’s exact dates for the relevant cycle rather than treating that usual window as a fixed deadline.
Nursery applications go directly to the school from age three, and families can arrange a visit. Contact the office on 01274 832123 or email office@denholme.nsat.org.uk to enquire or apply.
Free early education entitlement covers three- and four-year-olds before compulsory school age. Denholme PLUS provides wraparound care for all pupils: breakfast club runs from 7.30am to 8.45am, with after-school care from 3.15pm to 6.00pm. Breakfast and an afternoon light snack are included in those respective sessions. Contact the school for current charges.
