Long stretches of play, stories and conversation shape nursery life at Fagley Primary School. This school-attached provision on Falsgrave Avenue in Bradford includes two-year-olds. Its early years approach combines adult-led learning with time for children to pursue their own interests, giving exploration a clear place in the day.
Play carries much of the learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum and Development Matters guide the provision: children build skills through exploration, practical experiences and focused activities. Adult teaching sits alongside free-flow play, so children have opportunities both to learn something new and to try it out for themselves.
Indoor and outdoor play have equal emphasis. Reading areas and spaces for imaginative role play support storytelling, while extended periods of play let children return to ideas and develop them further. A fresh theme each half term provides a starting point, with room for children's interests to influence what happens next. Educational visits and visitors add experiences beyond the everyday activities.
Speaking and listening come before formal decoding. Pre-school and nursery children follow phase 1 of the Little Wandle Programme, concentrating on communication skills. Story sessions use an engaging introduction to draw children into a book. Together, these activities give young children opportunities to listen, talk and become familiar with storytelling. The emphasis is on participation and exploration, with adult guidance woven into the session.
Settling begins before a child starts. Practitioners use home visits, conversations with a previous setting, stay-and-play sessions and transition visits to get to know children and their families. Previous learning records also help staff understand a child's starting point. That gives the team information about the individual child before planning their learning.
During the first half term, staff build an initial assessment through interaction and observation. Continued observation then informs weekly planning and the next steps for each child. Progress is discussed with parents at consultation days following termly assessments; developmental concerns are raised promptly with families and relevant professionals.
Parents can also join phonics, reading and maths activities during the year, alongside stay-and-play opportunities. These sessions connect classroom activities with learning at home. For children needing additional support, the early years approach includes targeted interventions and adjustments to make activities accessible. The school office is the contact route for concerns to reach the SEND team, which includes a special needs leader and SEND coordinator.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Bradford residents can apply through Bradford Council's Online School Admissions service. For the September 2026 intake, the stated deadline was 15 January 2026; that cycle is now past.
Transition work is a separate matter. The early years team coordinates links between practitioners to support changes of setting or class. Familiarity and preparation help children with the move, but should not be treated as an assurance of admission.
Enquiries go to the school office on 01274 771124 or office@fagley.bradford.sch.uk. A contact form provides another route. School visits can be arranged by appointment through the business manager, allowing families to discuss the nursery in person.
For Early Years Pupil Premium, the school asks families to return a completed form to the office. Staff can help with completing it, giving parents a direct route to assistance with the paperwork.
