At a Glance

Storytime and play shape the nursery at Foxhill: core books supply themes and vocabulary, while children have time to pursue their own interests. This is a 24-place provision within the school's Early Years Unit in Queensbury, Bradford, with children starting from age three. Qualified teachers lead the provision, supported by a nursery nurse and teaching assistant.

Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 20 and 21 May 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning to communicate, manage feelings and move confidently with early reading, number work, creative activities and discovering how the world works. Foxhill teaches mainly through play, combining activities led by adults with uninterrupted time for children to choose their own play. Children can explore an idea themselves, then develop it through conversation with an adult.

CUSP structured storytime gives the curriculum its distinctive thread. Selected books introduce ideas and language, alongside songs and nursery rhymes. Staff bring new vocabulary into play and demonstrate speech, so language learning extends beyond the story itself. Friday brings a library visit and book exchange; trainers are also needed for PE.

Learning takes place outdoors as well as inside, with resources changed regularly and open-ended challenges encouraging children to solve problems and share ideas. Ramps connect the Early Years Unit with the outdoor play areas, and the outside areas are fenced and gated. Play therefore has a physical place in the day, alongside classroom activities.

In May 2025, children in early years followed familiar routines, concentrated on learning and developed greater confidence in speaking through their exchanges with adults. Checking understanding. The school-wide improvement action concerned inconsistent checks on learning, which could leave misunderstandings uncorrected. For families, this makes accurate assessment an important consideration alongside the positive early years findings.

Care and Support

Tapestry provides a connection between nursery learning and home. Each child has an online journal containing observations, photographs and comments; parents can respond and add achievements from outside school. Online topic webs explain the week's learning, while reading workshops and opportunities to read together give parents practical ways to participate.

Children staying for the afternoon can bring a packed lunch or have a charged school meal. School meals are prepared from scratch daily, with a salad bar offered each day. This gives families a choice about how to organise lunch around the longer session.

Additional needs are addressed through adaptations to the early years curriculum, with SENDCO involvement where needed. Children on the school's SEN register receive an Individual Support Plan, reviewed termly. That provides a specific plan for support and a regular opportunity to reconsider what the child needs.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Foxhill's nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery registration and Reception admission are separate processes: families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions route by its deadline. Choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the child's nursery experience, with the later school application treated separately.

Practical Information

The funded 15-hour pattern requires attendance every weekday morning, from 8:45am to 11:45am. Eligible families can use their additional 15 funded hours for PM Nursery, running from 11:45am to 2:45pm; an afternoon place can also be paid for when the additional funding cannot be claimed.

A short wraparound session runs from 2:45pm to 3:15pm. Breakfast care runs from 7:30am to 8:45am, with after-school options ending at 4:15pm or 6pm; the longer session includes tea. Some additional funded hours can be allocated to these sessions, with charges otherwise applying. Ask the school for current charges when arranging the pattern.

To register, complete and return both nursery registration forms. Enquiries go through the office on 01274 882426 or office@foxhill.bradford.sch.uk.
