Nursery at Green Lane Primary School

Pirates, farms and a mud kitchen give Green Lane’s youngest children plenty to work with. Little Buds caters for two-year-olds, while Nursery serves children aged three and four, within the school’s early years provision in Manningham, Bradford.
Nursery now occupies a classroom within the main school building, bringing it closer to school life. At the inspection on 3 and 4 December 2024, Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years across the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play shapes the learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum gives priority to movement, communication and children’s emotional and social development. In parent language, that means learning to express themselves, manage relationships and develop physical skills, alongside activities involving numbers, literacy, creative work and understanding their surroundings.
The day combines children’s own choices with activities prepared by adults and focused teaching in small groups. Children can pursue an idea independently, explore resources chosen to extend earlier learning, then work with an adult on a particular skill. Maths, English and phonics feature in these focused groups.
Topics follow children’s interests. Previous examples include Weddings, Pirates, Animals and Farms, giving familiar experiences and imaginative ideas a place in learning. Staff plan the activities around the skills children need to develop, so the topic serves the learning rather than becoming an end in itself.
In December 2024, early years children sustained their attention and cooperated during play. Indoor activities were complemented by outdoor exploration: in the mud kitchen, children improvised hot chocolate, passed equipment between them and looked for suitable marshmallows. This is a concrete example of imaginative play requiring conversation, shared decisions and concentration.
A calm adult approach supported children’s responses in early years in December 2024. Children also learnt routines and expectations from this stage, giving the play-based day a clear structure. Healthy snacks and toothbrushing were part of early years teaching, linking care habits with everyday learning.
Settling begins before a child joins fully. After a place is offered, the school encourages families to bring children to spend time with their new teacher and classmates. These introductory visits give children people and surroundings to recognise when they start.
Mellors Catering supplies school lunches. Nursery meals are chargeable, although eligible children may receive free school meals; ask the school about eligibility and current charges. For additional needs, families can contact the SENDCo through the office. Home-school communication includes Weduc, which carries direct messages, calendar information and urgent notices such as closures.
Attending Green Lane’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The Admissions Team handles annual Reception allocations and can be contacted at primaryadmissions@bradford.gov.uk.
Preparation is a separate matter from admission. Green Lane encourages daily shared reading, regular sleep and morning routines, and practice with dressing, tidying and looking after belongings. These are practical ways for families to support the next step, rather than an admissions advantage.
Breakfast Club accepts children from both Little Buds and Nursery. It runs from 8:00 to 8:30, with a place requested by email at greenlane@priestley.academy. Once confirmed, families take children to the Dining Hall between 8:00 and 8:10 and sign them in. Magic Breakfast contributes food; choices include bagels and porridge. Children practise serving themselves and clearing away, alongside games, reading and creative activities.
