At a Glance

Learning to listen comes before learning to read at Hollingwood's nursery. Children practise hearing separate sounds and joining them into spoken words, giving early literacy a concrete starting point. Conversation matters here.

The nursery sits on the school site on Hollingwood Lane in Bradford. Its team structure includes a Nursery Room Lead, while the school's EYFS Manager also holds the Special Educational Needs Coordinator role. That links early education and additional support within the leadership structure.

The Nursery Day

Speaking, listening and social development give the early years foundation stage (EYFS) its practical meaning here: children build the communication skills they need for learning and relationships. In September 2022, early years teaching used adult interaction to expand children's language and help them develop socially. The learning environment had plentiful resources, and the curriculum gave children a foundation for later learning.

Oral blending is a specific nursery activity. An adult separates the sounds in a word such as bus, and children put them together aloud. This starts with listening rather than printed words. Early blending activities also go home, allowing parents to practise the same skill with their child.

Books have a physical base in The Hub, the school's combined library and ICT suite. Classes across the school have scheduled access to borrow books and use its technology. Nursery also took part in a school maths curriculum day themed around Money, with children and parents encouraged to reason and solve problems together. That gives families a concrete example of learning they can share.

Care and Support

Settling was a strength of the early years in September 2022: children became comfortable at school promptly. Adult conversations supported both vocabulary and social development, connecting care with learning rather than treating them as separate tasks.

For additional needs, the school uses Assess-Plan-Do-Review and the Bradford matrix of need. Support can include interventions in small groups or individually, with adapted provision where needed. This gives families a staged structure for discussing a child's needs and reviewing support.

The school lunch choices include vegetarian dishes and halal meat options, with examples such as vegetable biryani and halal chicken jalfrezi. These are school meal choices; families should distinguish them from what their nursery booking includes. During school hours, child welfare concerns can be raised with the designated safeguarding team through the school telephone number.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process: Reception applications go online through Bradford Council, while the school handles nursery applications. Treat these as two distinct steps when planning your child's next year.

Practical Information

Nursery includes 30 Hours Extended Provision. Contact the school office for nursery enquiries on 01274 575353 or at office@hps.paymat.org. Nursery uniform is optional, keeping the clothing decision straightforward for families.
