Play, stories and learning to express feelings give Holybrook’s nursery its character. This is the starting point within Holybrook Primary School in Greengates, Bradford, where the school’s age range begins at three. The nursery admission number is 52, a nursery figure rather than the capacity of the whole school.
Early years provision was graded Outstanding at the Ofsted inspection on 5 and 6 April 2022. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery inspection.
Learning combines play and exploration with activities led by adults. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum encourages children to take an active part in their learning, with resources prepared for ongoing activities as well as focused teaching. Educational visits and visitors add real-life experiences. For parents, the useful distinction is that play and planned teaching both have a place.
Little Wandle provides the phonics programme from Nursery onwards. Books also prompt discussion in early years, helping children understand language and begin learning to read words. At the April 2022 inspection, reduced social contact during the pandemic had limited early vocabulary development for some of the youngest pupils. Addressing that gap was a core priority, and adults’ vocabulary teaching in nursery was exceptionally effective. This gives language development a clear place alongside exploration and play.
Personal, Health, Social and Economic education starts in nursery, with Jigsaw used in early years. Children begin by recognising what makes them special as part of learning about difference and equality. These are foundations for understanding themselves and getting along with others.
The wider school has spacious classrooms and substantial outdoor grounds. Those are school features rather than a description of a dedicated nursery garden.
Nursery staffing includes teaching and classroom support roles. Families also have school-wide routes for discussing progress: meetings with teachers and the Marvellous Me app, which carries activity updates, badges and messages. These give parents ways to continue conversations about learning at home.
Additional needs should be raised with staff early, preferably before a child starts, with relevant documentation shared. The SENDCo works with families, staff and outside professionals to coordinate support. Early contact gives the team time to prepare for a child’s needs.
A piece of fruit is provided each day for nursery children. Families may send a healthy snack, such as vegetables, fruit or a small portion of cheese, and children are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle. Allergies and dietary needs should be passed to the school promptly.
Attending Holybrook’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route: the Bradford LA Admissions Team handles main-school admissions, while the school handles nursery applications. Treat the two applications as separate decisions.
There are two nursery sessions: mornings run from 8:45am to 11:45am, and afternoons from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Each gives families a defined start and finish for planning collection and other childcare.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01274 611327 or email office@holybrookacademy.co.uk. Nursery admissions are handled directly by the school.
