Five mornings or five full days give Knowleswood's nursery a clear weekly rhythm. The provision is for children aged 3 and 4, within Knowleswood Primary School on Knowles Lane in Bradford. Morning places use the 15-hour entitlement; eligible families using the 30-hour entitlement can take full days in term time.
This is the school's own nursery, with indoor and outdoor learning provision. Familiarity starts before the first session: nursery children are invited to meet their future peers through pre-visits, and staff also make home visits. That gives families opportunities to begin sharing their child's needs before nursery begins.
Communication, physical development and personal, social and emotional development take priority in the early years curriculum. In parent language, that means building children's ability to communicate, move and manage relationships and feelings, giving them foundations for wider learning.
The nursery follows the statutory Early Years Framework (2026), with Development Matters guiding what children experience and learn. Play and activities with open-ended possibilities form part of that approach, so learning includes opportunities to explore rather than only work towards a predetermined answer. Indoor and outdoor provision gives children both kinds of learning space.
There are two distinct session lengths for 2026/27. Mornings run from 8.30am to 11.30am, while the full day finishes at 3.15pm after an 8.30am start. For a child attending all day, lunch forms part of the practical rhythm too: families can choose a purchased lunch or send a packed lunch, with lunch provided for children entitled to free school meals.
Settling can be adjusted to the child. Alongside nursery pre-visits and home visits, some children may have extra visits or a photo book to look through with their family. These provide ways to make unfamiliar people and places more recognisable before the start.
For developmental concerns, parents can speak to the class teacher or the special educational needs and disabilities coordinator (SENDCO). Nursery progress towards early learning goals is monitored in the first term; in the second, the nursery teacher and SENDCO discuss concerns about identified children and set targets, informing parents. The Bradford Early Years Support Grid helps staff identify possible additional needs.
Children on the SEND register have at least three review meetings each year. This gives support a recurring point for discussing progress and next steps. Families can also access the school's Early Help worker, who is based there fortnightly, for support with difficulties at home.
Attending Knowleswood's nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. The Local Authority Admissions Team handles school admissions, while nursery applications are arranged by the school. Keep those two processes separate in your planning.
Preparation for the next classroom is a different matter. Nursery-to-Reception transition is planned around helping children become familiar with their next teacher and environment. That supports the change in daily experience; it does not secure admission.
Nursery entry usually has three intakes across the year, one at each term's start. Parents may request a start once their child turns 3, and the school will try to accommodate it. Applications are made through the school office, which also arranges nursery visits. Contact 01274 778177 or office@knowleswoodacademy.co.uk.
The school uniform combines purple outer layers with a red polo shirt and black or grey bottoms; logos are optional. For collection, authorised adults must be over 16 and on the child's contact list. Tell the office before collection if someone different will come. Pedestrian access is through a gate, while vehicle movement is restricted at specified times around the school day.
