At a Glance

Moon and Stars give this nursery its own identity, with parents joining play during the week and sharing books on Fridays. Margaret McMillan Primary School’s nursery in Heaton, Bradford, takes children aged 3 to 4, with up to 39 children in each of its morning and afternoon classes. These are three-hour sessions within the school’s early years provision.

Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Children’s enthusiasm for learning and the attention paid to their individual needs were strengths in January 2025.

The Nursery Day

Settling comes first. At the beginning of the nursery year, routines concentrate on helping children feel secure; registration, early maths and phonics become part of the day as confidence develops. The timetable therefore changes with children’s development, rather than expecting newcomers to manage the same structured activities straight away.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum is taught through practical experiences and play. Adults join children’s play to extend learning, with opportunities both outside and indoors. This combines time to explore with adult guidance, while the growing place of structured activities introduces children to group routines.

Books bring families into the learning too. Friday Stay and Read sessions let parents share a story in nursery and select a book to read at home. Stay and Play lasts 20 minutes, on Wednesday mornings for Moon Class and Tuesday afternoons for Stars Class. Parents can take part in activities and see what interests their child, making the connection between home and nursery concrete.

There is a teaching point to keep in view. In January 2025, children beginning to write were receiving inconsistent teaching in pencil grip and legible letter formation. This finding concerned early writing across the school; it is relevant to families considering how those first writing habits are developed.

Care and Support

Nursery teaching is shared across Monday to Wednesday and Wednesday to Friday, supported by Early Years Practitioners and Teaching and Learning Partners. An EYFS lead oversees the provision. In January 2025, early years staff gave parents useful guidance and treated children as individuals.

Seesaw gives families photos, videos and examples of children’s work through a secure family login. It provides a way to follow learning alongside the opportunities to join nursery activities. For children with additional needs, the SENDCo works with teachers to adapt learning. Across the school, staff use WellComm and Colour Coding for speech and language needs; a sensory room can support children with an EHCP or significant additional needs with sensory regulation.

Snack provision includes a daily fruit or vegetable portion and free full-fat pasteurised milk until the term in which children turn five. Staff can accommodate dietary requirements when families tell them about these. Occasional celebration treats are vegetarian and nut free.

Moving On to Reception

A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Bradford local authority, which allocates the school’s places. Reception enquiries go to primaryadmissions@bradford.gov.uk. Keep this application separate from nursery registration and follow the authority’s normal deadline.

Preparation for the next stage also includes a summer-term New Parents Information Evening before Reception starts. Parents can discuss their child’s needs with class teachers or the SENDCo. Children needing more support with the move may begin preparations earlier, involving families, nurseries and the local authority. That is transition support, rather than an admissions entitlement.

Practical Information

Part-time places comprise 15 hours each week, taken as five mornings or five afternoons. Morning Nursery runs from 8:30am to 11:30am; Afternoon Nursery from 12:25pm to 3:25pm. The five-session pattern gives families a regular routine to plan around. All 3- and 4-year-olds qualify for 15 hours of free nursery education.

Visits can be arranged through the office on 01274 495934; enquiries can also go to mmps@priestley.academy. Collection requires an authorised adult aged 18 or over. If someone new will collect, notify the school beforehand and supply the agreed password, so changes to family arrangements need advance planning.
