Sharing a limited set of play resources has a deliberate purpose at Newby: children practise waiting and taking turns. That small detail captures the nursery's place within the school's early years provision, where learning includes how children work alongside one another.
Newby Primary School in Bradford has 39 morning nursery places. Children are eligible from the beginning of the term following their third birthday. This is the school's own nursery, rather than a separate childcare provider. Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 21 and 22 November 2023; that judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than giving the nursery a separate rating.
Play forms a substantial part of nursery learning. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Newby's provision connects physical development with opportunities to learn together. The bespoke early years outdoor learning area supports movement and other parts of the curriculum, giving children space to learn beyond the classroom.
Books are accessible during children's activity time in early years. Several copies of the same title let children share a story, revisit it together and practise retelling it. Fiction and information books linked to curriculum themes are also available, connecting children's independent choices with the topics they encounter.
In November 2023, early years activities had clear learning purposes and helped children prepare for their next stage. Adults also used resource choices to develop social habits: restricting how many items were available encouraged children to negotiate sharing. Learning to wait is part of the learning itself.
Before a child starts nursery, families are invited to a meeting with the headteacher to discuss the school's organisation and raise questions. This gives parents a conversation before the first session, rather than leaving practical concerns until their child has started.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the school's facilities include a hygiene room equipped with a hoist and an adjustable-height bed, plus an accessible toilet with another hoist. Staff training includes manual handling. These are concrete provisions for families considering how personal care and physical support could work during the nursery session. Newby also makes reasonable adjustments to meet children's needs.
Medication that needs to be administered at school must be handed to the office. Parents explain how and when it should be given and sign their consent, creating a clear handover between home and school. Safeguarding training covers every member of staff, including responding when children disclose concerns about life outside school. Parents with a safeguarding concern should speak to school staff.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Bradford Local Authority and meet the normal application deadline.
Newby's admissions arrangements list looked-after children, agency referrals based on need, siblings attending at admission and proximity to school as priorities. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions: familiarity with the school does not itself secure admission.
The nursery operates a morning-only pattern with 39 places. This makes the morning session the relevant starting point when considering how attendance fits around family routines.
Bradford Local Authority handles admissions. For enquiries to the school, telephone 01274 772208. The pre-start meeting provides an opportunity to discuss the school's organisation before attendance begins.
Children become eligible at the start of the term after the term in which they turn three.
