Play, exploration and learning to make choices give St Columba's nursery its character. This is provision for two- and three-year-olds within the Catholic primary school on Tong Street, Dudley Hill, Bradford. Language matters here: developing children's communication is a central early-years focus, giving parents a clear sense of the learning priorities behind the play.
At the inspection on 23 and 24 January 2024, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Choices and cooperative play are part of the children's experience. In January 2024, adults supported children sensitively as they decided what to do and learned to play together. For a young child, that combines opportunities to explore with adult help in taking part alongside others.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) curriculum builds learning from children's starting points at age two. Adults organise and lead activities that engage children, with a clear emphasis on language and communication. The practical priority is helping children express themselves as they learn.
Rainbow challenges are a named feature of EYFS learning. Children receive support to try tasks spanning different areas of the curriculum, giving their choices a learning purpose.
Knowing the child starts with knowing the family. In January 2024, staff worked with families to understand children's needs as they joined. This gives parents a useful role in explaining their child's starting point.
The nest is the school's resource provision for young children with communication and interaction needs, including children in early years. Its learning support is tailored to those needs. Families considering it should distinguish that specialist provision from the ordinary nursery offer.
For children receiving SEND support, My Support Plans describe the help and teaching approaches involved. Plans are reviewed each half term and shared with parents, creating regular opportunities to discuss progress and adjust support.
School meals are provided on the premises, and the school also accommodates packed lunches. Parents must complete the online allergy form and inform the office about an allergy or intolerance, so food needs reach the school directly.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer an oversubscription priority. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. Treat that application as a distinct decision and deadline.
For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. Parents seeking consideration in a specific category, such as Catholic applicants, also had to submit a Supplementary Information Form and supporting evidence to the school by that date. This was the 2026 entry cycle, not an upcoming deadline.
The educational connection is separate: early-years learning is planned to develop from age two through the foundation stage. That continuity does not change admission rights.
Nursery application forms can be obtained from either the nursery or the main school office and returned to either. The school office can be contacted on 01274 681961 or at office@col.bcwcat.co.uk.
The school can charge for certain early-years provision. Charged optional extras require parental agreement. Refer to the school for current charges before accepting any paid provision, so the arrangements are clear before your child starts.
The nursery provides for two- and three-year-old children.
Play and exploration sit alongside a focus on language and communication. Adults help children make choices and play together, while EYFS rainbow challenges support tasks across different curriculum areas.
