City park, the big red bridge and an end-of-year farm trip give Acorn's early years learning a distinctly Bradford setting. Outdoors is part of the learning day, with children able to use it throughout the day as an extension of their classroom.
Acorn is the nursery class within the EYFS Base at St Joseph's Catholic Primary School on Park Lane, Bradford. It belongs to a Catholic school whose stated aim is an education shaped by Gospel values, including children's spiritual, social and emotional development. For families, that faith context is part of the choice from the beginning.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) includes learning about the world around children. Development Matters guides assessment of Understanding the World, while early years history learning connects this area with other activities rather than treating it as a separate subject. The practical implication is that exploring surroundings and making connections form part of learning.
Outdoor experiences make that approach concrete. Early years children take local trips to city park and the big red bridge, followed by a farm visit at the end of the year. Access to the outdoor learning area also gives children space to move beyond the classroom during their day. Weather-ready clothing matters here.
Little Wandle supplies the phonics approach, with daily sessions across EYFS. Teaching moves through reviewing earlier learning, introducing something new, practising and using it. Extra sessions support children identified as needing help. Early years music is taught in class and connects with learning across the curriculum.
In June 2023, Ofsted identified reading as a priority beginning in early years and evaluated mathematics positively from that stage. There was also an early-reading concern across the school: some pupils continued to break words into individual sounds, limiting fluency. Recognising sounds readily was the improvement required, so the positive curriculum findings need that qualification.
Class Dojo provides daily updates for parents, giving families a regular connection with school life. The school describes behaviour support as based on relationships, understanding children's emotions and repairing relationships. Its aim is to help children develop emotional regulation, with parents involved as partners.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school uses the Bradford Matrix of Need to guide support in stages and works with local authority specialist services for significant or complex needs. Parents can arrange an appointment with a SEND coordinator through the office. That offers a direct route for discussing an individual child's support.
Safeguarding has a designated team that includes the Early Years Lead. Staff undertake annual safeguarding training, while designated leads also receive training for their role.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. For the 2025–2026 admission arrangements, nursery attendance was not an oversubscription priority; choosing Acorn should therefore be a decision about nursery provision itself.
For the subsequent application cycle, Bradford Council's online route had a closing date of 15 January 2026. A supplementary information form also had to go directly to the school, and omitting it could affect the child's priority category. That deadline is past.
Nursery enquiries can go to the office team by telephone on 01274 727 970 or by email at office@sjbr.bcwcat.co.uk. A nursery application form is provided separately from the Reception application process.
Label clothing, including coats, and dress children for outdoor play. Wellington boots suit wet conditions; sun hats are requested for warm weather. These are practical preparations for a nursery experience that extends outdoors.
