At a Glance

Daily stories, sound games and nursery rhymes give Saplings its clearest character: language runs through the nursery day. This is the nursery provision within St Stephen's CofE Primary School in West Bowling, Bradford, with children entering through the Saplings building. It sits within a Church of England school, rather than operating as a separate nursery.

Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 2 and 3 November 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.

The Nursery Day

Speaking and listening come before the demands of formal reading. Nursery children distinguish sounds made by their surroundings, instruments and body percussion. Rhyme, rhythm and alliteration feature alongside games that practise joining spoken sounds into words and breaking words into sounds. These are concrete ways to build children's attention to what they hear.

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is the named phonics programme. A teacher reads a story each day, and nursery rhymes are also used daily. The repeated combination of listening, stories and sound play gives families a clear picture of the nursery's early reading work.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning described in November 2022 combined language development with learning to share and cooperate. Adults helped children use resources together, while established routines made expectations clear. Making Diwali lanterns provided an example of practical activity becoming a conversation about appearance and texture. Learning was planned around communication, with books chosen to support it.

Topics extend beyond reading. The nursery curriculum maps include Weather Wonders!, Traditional Tales and Going Places!, with transport and a comparison between Spain and the UK among the latter's themes. These give children subjects to talk about alongside the daily stories. Half-termly curriculum booklets explain learning, vocabulary and ways families can help at home.

Care and Support

Parents are involved in discussions about individual additional needs. The school's graduated SEND approach can include small-group work, adapted planning, assessment and support from a Learning Support Assistant. More complex or persistent difficulties bring involvement from the SEN coordinator and external specialists. For a family raising a concern, the class teacher is the first point of contact.

School meals are supplied by Bradford Council Facilities Management Catering Service, with a three-week menu rotation and a School Meals App for checking dishes. The school meal service includes halal food and excludes nuts. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than an entitlement to lunch within either nursery session.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. The school's admission policy for 2022–2023 also explicitly gave no additional Reception priority to children attending its nursery. Families must make a separate Reception application through Bradford Council's online Common Application Form, by the normal application deadline.

The same dated policy describes a summer-term introductory meeting for new parents and carers to support starting school. This is a transition arrangement, separate from the decision about who receives a place.

Practical Information

Saplings operates morning and afternoon sessions from Monday to Friday. The School Day page gives morning arrival between 8:45am and 8:55am, with collection between 11:35am and 11:45am; afternoon arrival is between 12:25pm and 12:35pm, followed by collection between 3:05pm and 3:15pm.

Timing discrepancy. The School Hours page instead gives sessions of 8:40am–11:40am and 12:20pm–3:20pm. These conflicting schedules matter when arranging journeys and collection.

Children use the Saplings entrance. For late arrivals, parents ring its doorbell so nursery staff can let them in. Nursery enquiries can go to the school office on 01274 731698 or office@ststephens.bradford.sch.uk; an online contact form is another route.
