Nursery at Thackley Primary School

Ambitious vocabulary gives Thackley’s early years its character: children learn words linked to their activities and use them accurately with one another. That makes language part of the learning itself. At the inspection on 3 and 4 July 2024, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding; this judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The nursery belongs to Thackley Primary School on Town Lane, Bradford. It has 78 places, with entry possible from the term following a child’s third birthday. Provision combines morning and afternoon attendance with up to 32 full-time places for children eligible for 30 hours.
Three-hour sessions give the day a clear shape. Morning children attend from 8:30am to 11:30am; the afternoon runs from noon to 3pm. For children with a full-time place, the two sessions sit either side of a lunchtime choice: go home between sessions or remain with a packed lunch.
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the concrete learning described in July 2024 centres on language, early writing and mathematical development. Activities match the next steps children need to take. Vocabulary is chosen to fit the activity, giving children words they can put to use while learning and talking together.
Writing and early mathematics extend across the provision. These are opportunities throughout the learning environment, so children can practise developing skills in their activities. The combination matters: adults connect what children do with what they need to learn next, while the language work helps them express that learning to each other.
Lunch arrangements matter for families choosing the longer day. Children holding a 30-hour place can leave at 11:30am and return at noon, or bring their own packed lunch and stay. Remaining over lunch carries an additional charge, payable through Parent Pay. Contact the school for current charges before choosing that arrangement.
For SEND enquiries, the school has a SEN co-ordinator and a governor with responsibility for SEND. Bradford’s Local Offer provides information about support and activities in the area, giving parents a further route to local information alongside the school team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Bradford Council, which handles Reception allocations rather than the school. Treat that application as a separate task even if your child is already attending nursery.
The admissions guidance gives the beginning of January as the deadline for returning the application to the authority. Keep the Reception application distinct from putting your child’s name down for nursery: the nursery enquiry goes to the school office, while the Reception application goes to the council.
The attendance model is 15 hours in mornings or afternoons, with up to 32 places offering 30 hours to eligible children. There are 39 places in each session, with full-time attendance using places across both. Eligibility therefore matters when considering the longer pattern.
To register interest in nursery, telephone the school office on 01274 414437. School tours can also be booked through the office, by phone or at admin@thackleyschool.com. A tour gives families a practical next step before selecting their attendance pattern.
