Purposeful play and carefully chosen vocabulary give Thornbury’s nursery its character. Children practise early number and literacy skills through play, while adults help them develop ideas and make sense of their surroundings. This is the nursery within Thornbury Primary Leadership Academy, on Dick Lane in Bradford, so its learning sits within the school’s early years provision.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 14 and 15 September 2022. That judgement covers the early years phase rather than a separately inspected nursery. The detail behind it matters: adults introduced new vocabulary deliberately, and children used those words in their play.
Play has a learning purpose here. Nursery activities give children opportunities to explore their environment, try out ideas and practise literacy and mathematics. Learning also includes understanding rules and developing self-control. For a young child, that brings learning to get along with others into the same day as learning about numbers and words.
The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, brings together language, movement and emotional development with early reading and writing, mathematics, exploring the world and creative expression. Art, role-play, music and dance are among its activities. These give children several ways to express an idea, rather than relying only on spoken answers. Staff observe children regularly and use assessment to shape learning around their needs.
Read, Write Inc is the school’s phonics approach, with daily teaching adapted to children’s abilities beginning in Nursery or Reception. Physical activity has specialist staffing too: two full-time sports coaches teach PE from Nursery upwards. The school site includes two full-size all-weather pitches and a running track. In January 2026, nursery children joined a balance-bike training event delivered by Pro-Ride Coaching. That is a concrete example of practising movement and balance alongside classroom learning.
Class teachers provide the first contact between home and school, with the pastoral team working alongside families. MyChildAtSchool (MCAS) gives parents a portal for school communications and information about their child. This provides a practical way to keep track of messages alongside conversations with teaching staff.
Food provided by the academy meets national nutritional standards. That establishes the basis for its catering, rather than a particular nursery menu or meal pattern.
In September 2022, early years staff worked closely with parents and planned learning around children’s starting points. There were also school-wide concerns: teachers did not consistently receive enough detail about some children with SEND who had no EHC plan, and some teachers missed gaps in learning. For families discussing additional support, clear information about a child’s needs and how teaching responds to them matters.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal local authority process, using Bradford Council’s school admissions route and meeting the deadline for their child’s intake. Treat choosing a nursery place and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
