Morning or afternoon sessions give Wellington’s nursery a clear half-day shape, with 39 places in each session. This is the school’s own provision in Bradford, welcoming children from age three. A nursery class teacher features in the staffing structure, alongside the school’s early years practitioners. A visit before starting gives parents and children an opportunity to meet staff and become familiar with the school.
Stories, singing and rhymes are concrete features of early years learning here. In November 2023, Ofsted described children developing confidence, cooperating with others and communicating capably; children also paid close attention during stories. For parents, that gives a useful picture of learning through listening and language, alongside learning to take part with other children.
The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the reference points used to assess children’s progress. Observation and continuing assessment are part of that process, allowing staff to consider what a child can do and where support needs to change. For children with additional needs, the Developmental Journal Early Learning Goals help staff assess development in the Foundation Stage.
Physical access is also relevant to the day. The school’s Accessibility Plan describes a single-storey building with broad corridors, wide entrance doors and entrances that are level or ramped. These are school-wide features, giving families with mobility needs practical details to consider when discussing their child’s access.
Settling begins with a visit together: parents are invited to bring their child before the nursery start, meet staff and become familiar with the school. That gives the child an introduction with a parent present, rather than making the first session their first contact with staff.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities starts with the child’s needs. The SEND policy explicitly includes children entering nursery with needs already identified, with parents and external professionals involved in planning and regular assessment. A formal diagnosis is not required before adaptations and support begin.
Individual Support Plans set out targets and provision, with a review each term and a copy for parents. Depending on need, support can include a small group or advice from a Speech and Language Therapist. Families can contact the SENDCo through the office or at sendco@wellingtonps.co.uk, giving them a direct route for discussing concerns.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make another application through the normal admissions process. The School Admissions Team handles Reception allocations.
The school’s linked admission arrangements for 2025/2026 explicitly required a separate application; nursery attendance was not a priority category in the criteria for other community schools. Families should treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
Transition support is a different matter. The SEND policy provides for a summer session to meet new teaching staff, with extra classroom visits and an individual transition book for children with SEND where appropriate. Familiarity supports the change of class; it does not secure admission.
Nursery entry is in September, with places allocated by waiting-list order within each intake group. The booking pattern is a morning or afternoon session. Contact the school on 01274 774446 for nursery enquiries; appointments to look around and discuss a child’s needs can be requested.
The linked 2025/2026 arrangements describe free early education entitlement for three- and four-year-olds. For current charges, refer to the school. Its charging policy allows voluntary contributions for educational visits, while protecting participation when parents do not contribute; a visit may be cancelled if contributions leave too much of its cost uncovered.
For planning around closures, the 2026/2027 calendar includes holidays and staff training days. Autumn half term runs from 26 to 30 October 2026, and 23 November 2026 is a training-day closure.
