Three-hour sessions and an emphasis on learning new words give Westminster's nursery a clear shape. This is the nursery within Westminster Church of England Primary Academy on Westminster Road in Bradford, with morning and afternoon sessions rather than a single nursery timetable matching the school day. For families, those shorter blocks are the practical starting point.
At the inspection on 20 and 21 September 2023, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The nursery's educational character is clearest in its attention to communication and preparation for the next stage of learning.
Adult-led learning forms part of the early years experience. In September 2023, teaching in those sessions worked well, and activities had a clear educational purpose. Staff encouraged children to try unfamiliar vocabulary and expressions, with especially successful learning when adults helped them put that language to use. The benefit is practical: children get support with using words, alongside learning what they mean.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives this learning its direction. Westminster aims for children to become independent, motivated learners who can communicate confidently, ask questions and think through their learning. It also wants them to see mistakes as opportunities to learn. These are aims for the end of the Foundation Stage, giving parents a sense of the direction of nursery learning rather than a checklist of immediate expectations.
During the summer term, nursery children begin developing skills intended to prepare them for Read Write Inc Phonics. This is preparation for the later taught programme. It connects the nursery's emphasis on language with the next steps in learning to read.
Settling was a positive feature of early years in September 2023: children became comfortable quickly. For parents considering a first experience of group education, that is a useful finding about the start of children's time here.
Families can discuss additional needs with the school's SENDCO team. Westminster uses Assess-Plan-Do-Review to organise support, following a graduated approach based on Bradford children's services guidance. This gives discussions about a child's needs a structure: assess the situation, plan support, put it into practice and review it.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their child's entry year. Reception applications go through Bradford's online admissions system; nursery applications are handled by the school. Keep those two processes separate in your planning.
Session length. Nursery runs fixed three-hour sessions: mornings are 8:20am to 11:20am, and afternoons are noon to 3pm. Those precise collection times matter when arranging work or other childcare.
Children enter nursery in September, January or April. To request an application form, contact the school office on 01274 648490 or email office@west.bdat-academies.org. A child can be added to the waiting list at any point.
