Nursery at Wibsey Primary School

Play has a practical purpose at Wibsey: children learn to help with coats, copy a new technique and ask for help when they get stuck. Building Learning Power gives these everyday moments a place in the nursery curriculum, making cooperation something children practise rather than simply hear about.
The nursery takes children from age three and belongs to the school's Foundation Stage Unit, across the road from the main building. Ramp access is provided throughout the site. That separate location matters when planning the journey to nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines structured play with learning about language, movement, relationships, early reading, mathematics and creative expression. Adults observe children's play to understand their interests and what they can already do, then plan the next challenge. Literacy and maths have a daily teaching slot, using both class activities and smaller groups. Outdoor activities extend the learning beyond the classroom.
Building Learning Power makes learning habits tangible. Nursery examples include mixing colours with block paints after watching another child, wrapping boxes by copying a demonstration and learning to handle chopsticks. The help sequence is simple: have a go, turn to another child, then involve an adult. Children also practise working together while fastening coats. These are small tasks with a useful purpose: developing independence alongside the ability to cooperate.
At the inspection on 25 and 26 April 2023, Ofsted found well-equipped early-years classrooms and outdoor areas, with climbing equipment and a mini café among the resources. The early-years teaching combined carefully organised maths and phonics sessions with related activities, while adults demonstrated vocabulary and gave children opportunities to use it. Children learned routines, played cooperatively and engaged with their learning. Curriculum detail. The early-years curriculum still needed knowledge broken into more precise steps. For families, that qualifies the positive assessment of teaching and resources.
Support planning involves families. The school's SEND process uses a One Page Profile, drawing together parents' views, the child's contribution where appropriate and advice from outside professionals when needed. Its Assess-Plan-Do-Review cycle is linked to The Bradford Matrix of Need, giving support a process for review rather than treating a plan as a finished document.
Staff receive continuing SEND training, with specialist training for those supporting medical or physical needs. Emotion Coaching training also extends across the staff team, and parent videos provide a way to use the strategies at home.
Before a child joins, families provide health information, dietary needs, food allergies, emergency contacts and collection arrangements. For concerns, the first conversation is with the class teacher. The school office can also connect families with the Pastoral Leader for early help.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Bradford local authority allocates school places, and the school's admissions page directs families to its application service. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

Foundation-stage uniform uses the school's purple, gold and grey colours. Clothing should carry the child's name, a practical detail when children are learning to manage their own belongings.
