Nursery at Wilsden Primary School

At a Glance

Early routines are a defining feature of Wilsden’s nursery context: in November 2023, children in most early-years lessons followed routines introduced from the start. That gives families a concrete picture of how children begin to understand expectations within a school setting.

The nursery belongs to Wilsden Primary School on Tweedy Street in Wilsden, Bradford. Ofsted graded the school’s early-years provision Good following its inspection on 15 and 16 November 2023. This judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection.

The Nursery Day

Learning connects with the school’s subsequent curriculum: in November 2023, the curriculum was organised so that learning continued from early years onwards. For a nursery child, that places these first learning experiences within a longer sequence.

Routines also form part of the learning day. In most lessons, including early years, children followed expectations taught from the outset in November 2023. Learning how a session works is therefore part of the experience alongside its curriculum content.

Device use has clear boundaries. Early-years children must not have unsupervised access to devices, and staff must not take digital photographs on personal devices. These arrangements place responsibility for technology and image handling with adults.

Care and Support

Eating brings a specific staffing safeguard: a staff member with paediatric first-aid training must be in the room while children eat. Early-years staff undergo enhanced DBS checks, and staffing ratios and supervision requirements must be followed. These are concrete arrangements around everyday care.

Personal care must protect children’s privacy and dignity. For children with special educational needs or disabilities, or medical conditions, the school provides additional pastoral support and help with communication. The school also plans individual behaviour support with parents where needed, giving families a role in agreeing the response to their child’s needs.

Safeguarding leadership covers early-years provision, including wraparound care, through a designated lead or deputy. Staff receive training to recognise signs of harm that a child may communicate without words. Concerns must be passed immediately to safeguarding leads and recorded using CPOMS or paper forms. This matters for young children who cannot readily explain a worry.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as two separate decisions.
