Nursery at Woodhouse Grove School

Conversation and sustained concentration give this nursery its character. In February 2024, ISI found that early years children developed confident language skills and stayed engaged with activities planned around their individual needs. The emphasis is on helping young children think, communicate and keep trying.
Brontë House Nursery takes children aged two to four, with Nursery and Pre-School options. It belongs to Woodhouse Grove School’s junior provision, and nursery applicants visit Ashdown Lodge to meet the Early Years team. Brontë House occupies a separate site half a mile from the senior school. At the February 2024 visit, the early years provision included three nursery classes.
Learning starts with the individual child. The February 2024 early years findings describe activities matched to children’s needs, with adults using purposeful questions to extend their thinking. Children maintained their interest over sustained periods. For parents, that gives a useful picture of adult involvement: staff help children develop an idea and explain themselves, rather than simply complete an activity.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) brings together learning and development. Here, the February 2024 findings connect language and communication with emotional growth, creativity, physical development and social skills. Learning therefore reaches beyond early academic tasks to include how children express themselves and relate to others.
The learning environment also contributes. Its arrangement drew children’s interest and encouraged participation, while staff support helped them develop across these different areas. The strongest evidenced feature of the nursery day is this combination of individual planning, conversation and sustained engagement.
In February 2024, the early years setting was judged caring and safe, with appropriate supervision and trained safeguarding leaders. These are findings about the early years provision itself. They give parents reassurance about the adults responsible for children’s welfare during their time there.
Support also extended to emotional development alongside learning. The practical implication is that children’s feelings and social development formed part of staff support, rather than being treated separately from their activities. Before joining, nursery applicants and their families are invited to Ashdown Lodge to meet the Early Years team, providing an opportunity to discuss their child with the people involved in the provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Existing nursery families should confirm their next steps for Reception entry with the admissions team. Reception applicants use the online application form and are invited to Ashdown Lodge to meet the Early Years team. Keep the nursery choice and the Reception application distinct when planning your child’s next stage.
Applications for nursery places go through the school’s online form. A visit can also be requested through the Arrange a Visit form, which includes Nursery as an entry option. This provides a direct way to meet the team before making a decision.
For current nursery charges, consult the school’s Nursery and Pre-School fee information for 2026/2027. Means-tested school bursaries do not cover Brontë House, so families considering this nursery should plan on that basis.
