Nursery at White Court School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Play is the starting point at Little Acorns, White Court School’s nursery in Great Notley. Children aged 2 to 4 can attend, and the nursery describes its approach as play-based. It sits within the school, giving families a school setting for these early years rather than a separate childcare establishment.

At the November 2022 inspection, the nursery had 42 part-time places. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good; that judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Enjoyment and concentration went together in November 2022. Nursery children were eager to learn, enjoyed their activities and behaved well. The early years curriculum had a deliberate structure, and children sustained their attention during learning. For parents, that combination matters: play had a learning purpose, alongside the pleasure of taking part.

The nursery’s play-based approach gives its educational character a clear starting point. The November 2022 findings also described ambition for each child’s learning, so the emphasis was on what individual children could achieve, alongside their enthusiasm for activities.

Care and Support

Additional needs are handled through the school’s SENCO and teaching staff, with parents involved in identifying concerns and agreeing support. The school uses an assess, plan, do, review cycle. A One Plan brings together a One Page Profile and Provision Plan, recording what matters to the child and the help they need. Progress towards agreed outcomes is reviewed with families each term, giving those conversations a practical focus.

White Court has experience of Early Year Talkboost for communication support. Its wider SEND resources also include visual timetables and extra processing time. These are ways to adapt learning to a child’s needs, rather than expecting every child to respond in the same way. Across the school site, ramps and an accessible toilet with an adjustable changing table support physical access and care.

Safeguarding responsibilities include deputy leads for the Early Years Setting and the Early Years Deputy Manager. Parents can raise a concern through the school’s contact team, providing a direct route to the adults responsible for child protection.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Essex County Council’s primary school admissions portal, meeting the normal application deadline. Nursery applications, by contrast, go directly to White Court School. Treat these as two separate decisions and processes.

Preparation for the move has its own arrangements. Foundation Stage teachers visit children in their preschool setting, and the SENCO also visits children identified as having additional needs. Parents take part in meetings during transition. These contacts allow families to discuss their child before the move. Reception admission remains a separate application process.

Practical Information

For nursery enquiries, email EYadmin@whitecourt.essex.sch.uk. Applications begin by requesting a registration-of-interest form from the school. Visits can be arranged through the same email address or by calling 01376 331801, so families have a direct route to discuss availability and see the setting.

The school office operates Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and closes during school holidays and INSET days. The address is Ennerdale Avenue, Great Notley, Essex, CM77 7UE. Keep the office’s opening pattern in mind when planning contact or arranging a nursery visit.
