Georgian and Victorian market town streets converge on the historic centre of Braintree, an Essex town of around 43,000 people that grew along the River Brain and northward to Stane Street, the Roman road from Braughing to Colchester. Great Notley is widely regarded as one of the most competitive postcodes in the district for school places, while Panfield and Shalford draw families seeking popular primary catchments along the western fringe. The Braintree Branch Line links two town stations to the Great Eastern Main Line at Witham, putting Chelmsford within roughly thirty minutes by rail. The town merged with its neighbour Bocking in 1934. Stisted lies just to the east.
