Nursery at St Helen's Catholic Infant & Nursery School

Books, early number work and a Catholic school identity give this nursery its character. St Helen's nursery belongs to the infant school on Sawyers Hall Lane in Brentwood. Its learning programmes include The Power of Reading, Little Wandle Letters and Sounds and White Rose Maths, giving parents specific starting points for understanding what children learn.
In March 2024, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for nursery literacy and mathematics: early reading and language, alongside early number learning. The Power of Reading supports literacy, helping children build the foundations of reading and language. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds is used for phonics, which introduces the sounds letters make. For parents, these named programmes give a starting point for discussing their child's developing language, reading and understanding of letter sounds with the teaching team.
For mathematics, nursery teaching uses White Rose Maths resources. This gives early number learning its own programme alongside literacy. The school aims to develop independence and resilience through its curriculum, so its ambitions extend beyond the content children learn to how they approach learning.
Outdoor provision is also part of the nursery picture. In July 2026, work was under way to develop the early years outdoor area for the September 2026 nursery and Reception cohorts. This was a physical investment in the space intended for those children; the announcement described work in progress.
Beyond the curriculum, nursery children can take part in ballet, Spanish and Mini Movers street dance in the autumn 2026 club programme. These give families additional choices for movement and language activities. Club bookings and payments go directly to providers.
Parents have a direct route to the teaching team through Foundation@st-helens-inf.essex.sch.uk. Teachers respond within 24 hours, restricted to working hours in term time. That makes the email useful for routine communication, with a clear boundary around when a reply can be expected.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school's coordinator can be contacted through the office. Families can use that route to discuss their child's needs. Safeguarding responsibilities include the deputy headteacher as designated lead and the EYFS leader as a deputy lead. Concerns can be emailed to admin@st-helens-inf.essex.sch.uk with URGENT Safeguarding in the subject.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Essex County Council; choosing the nursery therefore leaves a further admissions step to complete.
For the September 2026 intake, the Reception application deadline was 15 January 2026. The school also required supplementary information forms and supporting documents by 4pm that day. Those dates belong to a past admissions cycle. The council application and the school's supporting paperwork were separate requirements, so families needed to complete both rather than treating nursery enrolment as their Reception application.
Nursery applications go to the school itself. General enquiries can be made on 01277 215626 or by emailing admin@st-helens-inf.essex.sch.uk. The school encourages families to walk where possible and avoid driving along Sawyers Hall Lane, making the journey a practical consideration alongside the nursery choice.
