Nursery at Alveley Primary School

Conversation, stories and learning to play alongside others give Alveley’s nursery its clearest character. In April 2025, children developed social and communication skills quickly from their earliest nursery days, building the foundations for later learning. This is the school’s own nursery provision on Daddlebrook Road in Alveley; at that inspection, it catered for children aged three to four.
Early reading begins with listening. In April 2025, children in the early years were learning to distinguish sounds around them and becoming interested in books and stories. Those experiences give young children a starting point for reading, while the nursery’s emphasis on communication helps them express themselves and take part with other children.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers education from birth to five. Here, outdoor learning includes opportunities for Woodland School sessions in the early years, supporting children’s physical development. Listening, social interaction and movement therefore sit alongside the beginnings of literacy, rather than making preparation for school solely a matter of reading.
Support for additional needs involves both the school SENCO and a trust primary SENDCO. Families can raise concerns with the class teacher or SENCO, and children’s support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning help, putting it into practice and reviewing its effect. Parents take part in termly reviews, giving them a regular opportunity to discuss progress and shape the next steps.
Practical help can include small-group teaching, adapted resources and assistance with dressing, toileting or eating. For children with more complex needs, the school can seek specialist advice with parental permission, including from the Autism Outreach Team or Educational Psychology Service. Support is organised around the individual child.
Physical access matters too. Ramps at the main doors make the building accessible to children with physical disabilities, and suitable toilets are provided. A home and school contact book can support communication when the family and school agree it would be useful.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer admissions priority. Families must make a separate application through Shropshire Council, or their home local authority if they live outside Shropshire, by the normal deadline of 15 January. For 2027–28 entry, applications are ranked against the primary schools’ oversubscription criteria when places are oversubscribed. Choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself.
Classroom preparation is a separate matter. Nursery children have opportunities to visit Reception before starting school, and the nursery and Reception teachers exchange information. Where needed, meetings bring parents, both teachers and the SENCO together, helping the next team understand a child’s support requirements before the move.
Visits to the school can be arranged by calling 01746 780284. The address is Daddlebrook Road, Alveley, Shropshire, WV15 6JT. For families considering the nursery, a visit provides an opportunity to discuss their child’s needs with the school, including any additional support involved in joining and moving between classes.
