Once Somerset's largest inland port and a centre for brick and tile manufacture, Bridgwater grew along the River Parrett from a castle founded in 1200 to a built-up area of nearly 48,000 today. Great Western Railway services connect Bridgwater station to Bristol Temple Meads in around fifty minutes. Enmore, on the Quantock fringe to the southwest, is among the most sought-after catchments for primary school places in the wider area, while Durleigh carries a similarly school-competitive character further west. Stockmoor, Puriton, and Cannington extend the catchment map. The Church of St Mary, which served as an observation point during the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685, and the Blake Museum anchor a compact historic centre around the river.
