At a Glance

Nursery rhymes give Hamp’s youngest groups their names, while outdoor classrooms give their learning room to spread. Humpty Dumpty caters for children aged 2–3; Five Little Ducks and Jack and Jill cater for ages 3–4. This is the nursery provision within Hamp Nursery and Infants' School on Rhode Lane in Bridgwater.

Each early years room has its own outdoor space, and the nurseries can use the Forest School area. That makes outdoor learning part of the children’s immediate surroundings, alongside their indoor activities.

The Nursery Day

Play and small-group teaching share the day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines activities children choose with tasks led by adults, including a small teaching group during the day. Staff adjust the timetable as children’s needs change over the year. Children therefore have time to explore their interests as well as practise something with an adult.

Indoor and outdoor classrooms have equal weight in the planning. Literacy Tree stories provide a starting point for the curriculum, with topics connecting different areas of learning. Numicon materials and number lines are among the mathematics resources. Stories and practical materials give children concrete starting points for language and number work.

In April 2023, Ofsted found that early years children developed their knowledge effectively, with adults helping speech and language progress. Play supported learning to cooperate, share and wait for a turn. Staff used both outdoor and indoor areas for repeated practice of vocabulary and skills. The emphasis was on returning to learning until it became secure.

Care and Support

Afternoons include keyworker groups, giving children regular time with their keyworker and the other children in that group. This creates a recurring point of contact within the early years day. The nursery team includes a manager with an early years SEND coordination role, alongside a deputy manager, room supervisor and practitioners.

Support can include small-group work and adapted questioning. Where appropriate, a child with an identified need may have a Pupil Passport and provision map recording support and short-term targets. Staff receive training in Somerset Total Communications and sign language, providing additional ways to support communication. Hamp is also a nut-free school, a practical consideration for food brought from home.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process. Somerset Council allocates first-time school places; applications can be made online or using a form obtained from the school office. The deadline is normally mid January, with the precise date set by the council.

After places have been allocated, an induction programme includes children’s visits to meet teachers, information for parents and a Parents Evening. These arrangements help families prepare for the change. They are separate from the allocation of a place.

Practical Information

Nursery enquiries go through the nursery office on 01278 427992, with a nursery administrator handling admissions and invoicing. The nursery is on Rhode Lane, Bridgwater, TA6 6JB.
