Nursery at Northgate Primary School

Storytelling gives Northgate Nursery its character. In June 2026, nursery children were confidently retelling The Very Hungry Caterpillar, with speaking and listening central to their learning. That is a concrete example of children using language to organise and share their ideas.
This is Northgate Primary School's own nursery in Bridgwater, with provision for two-year-olds. The nursery occupies a single-storey building with access for all. Ofsted's June 2026 judgement for the school's early years provision was Strong standard, covering early years rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guides learning here. For parents, that means helping children develop communication, movement and social skills alongside early literacy, maths, creativity and understanding their surroundings. Staff observe children each week, then use Individual Play Plans to give each child a target for the half term. Parents share those targets, creating a connection between learning at nursery and at home.
Books have a clear purpose beyond listening quietly. In June 2026, nursery children enjoyed telling familiar stories themselves, while adults demonstrated everyday routines so that younger children could learn what to do. Turn-taking and recognising emotions also began in Nursery. These are practical foundations for joining activities and playing with other children.
Past activities show how themes become hands-on experiences. During autumn 2023, children used the mud kitchen, shook Australian rain makers and created sparkler wands from natural materials during Forest School sessions. Their celebrations included Bridgwater Carnival and Diwali, with Coconut Barfi making among the activities. In the 2023/2024 curriculum, Music from around the world involved listening to music from different countries and exploring instruments. These examples connect new vocabulary with things children can hear, handle and make.
Each child receives a key person when they start. This adult takes responsibility for their care and development, observes their learning and supports their progress. Daily conversations and Going Home Slips give parents contact with that familiar adult; termly Parents Meetings provide time for a fuller discussion.
Before children started, relationships with families helped staff understand individual children in June 2026. That preparation matters: care can begin with knowledge of the child rather than just their age. The nursery team includes a manager, deputy manager and early years practitioners.
Additional support begins with a conversation with parents. The Plan, Do, Assess & Review process identifies next steps, puts support into practice and checks its effect. A SEND Support Plan or referral to a specialist service may follow. The nursery manager also holds the early years SENCo role, linking oversight of support with daily nursery management. The nursery's designated safeguarding lead is its manager, providing a clear role for raising welfare concerns.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a place in Northgate's Reception. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the relevant deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions: familiarity with the setting does not secure a school place.
Places can be paid for or supported through Early Years Entitlement funding. The nursery offers funding from the term after a child's third birthday and accepts funded two-year-old places. Parents are responsible for applying for two-year-old funding and 30 hours funding; eligibility conditions apply to those funded routes.
