Nursery at Longroyde Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Spider webs, changing leaves and winter ice give Longroyde’s youngest children something real to investigate. Outdoor learning sits alongside indoor play in the early years curriculum, with adults following children’s curiosity rather than keeping every activity tied to a fixed topic.
Two age groups make up the nursery: Owlets for two-year-olds and Little Owls for children aged three and four. Both belong to Longroyde Primary School’s provision at Field Top Road, Brighouse. This is the nursery site to use for enquiries and visits, rather than the school’s Longroyde Road address.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 8 and 9 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play has a clear learning purpose here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together early communication, movement, relationships, reading and number skills, alongside discovering the world and expressing ideas creatively. Indoor and outdoor environments are planned around this framework. Children explore, try things out and develop their own ways of thinking through problems.
Outside, an interest in a spider web or a change in the weather can become the starting point for learning. Adults respond to those discoveries as they happen. That gives children concrete things to talk about and investigate, connecting language with their immediate surroundings.
Stories and counting also feature in the early years experience. In October 2024, children were developing number understanding through practical activities and enjoying stories shared by adults. These are useful foundations: numbers have a purpose, while books give children reasons to listen and talk.
The nursery’s 2025/2026 topic plans included Super Duper You, Farmyard Friends and Zoom to the Moon for Owlets. Little Owls had Im Special Im Me as an autumn theme. These named topics give parents a starting point for conversations about learning at home, while the response to children’s interests allows room for discoveries beyond the plan.
Settling into familiar routines is a strength supported by the October 2024 early years findings: children adjusted promptly and took part positively in activities. For a child beginning nursery, knowing what happens next can make participation easier.
Owlets has early years practitioners, while Little Owls has a nursery teacher. Families seeking SEND support can contact the school’s SEN coordinator and inclusion manager through the office. The school’s SEND approach includes working with parents, giving families a route into discussions about their child’s needs.
Food is prepared in the Field Top Road kitchens, with dietary needs and allergens catered for. Meal arrangements use School Money or the Teachers2Parents Mobile App. Bookings, including packed-lunch arrangements, must be completed by Friday at 2pm for the following week, so lunch requires some advance organisation.
Checking support. The October 2024 inspection identified school-wide weaknesses in evaluating learning interventions and analysing attendance strategies. These were not described as nursery-only concerns. For families using additional support, discussing how progress will be reviewed is a useful practical step.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer priority under the oversubscription criteria on the school’s admissions page. Those criteria concern care status, professionally supported medical or social circumstances, siblings and distance from the Field Top site.
Reception requires a separate application through the normal admissions process by the relevant intake deadline. Calderdale residents apply online through Calderdale Council; families living elsewhere apply through their home local authority. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery attendance.
The nursery timetable has a morning session from 9am to noon and an afternoon session from noon to 3pm. These are the nursery timings to plan around.
For enquiries, telephone 01484 715300 or email admin2@longroyde.calderdale.sch.uk.
