Twenty-six nursery places on an infant school site give Rainbow Class its clear identity: an early start within Callis Grange Nursery and Infant School in Broadstairs. The nursery has its own class teacher, while belonging to the wider school on Beacon Road. For parents choosing between settings, that school setting is a defining practical feature.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good following its inspection on 20 and 21 April 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives learning its shape. Its seven areas bring together language, movement, relationships, literacy, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world. For a parent, this means that learning to express a feeling or handle materials belongs alongside developing an interest in words and numbers. The focus extends beyond early academic skills.
In April 2022, early years teachers understood their curriculum well and planned activities across its development areas. Children learnt both outdoors and in classrooms, with resources supporting learning in both spaces. Indoor and outdoor environments were assessed positively, giving children different settings in which to explore.
Visits from paramedics and the local fire brigade brought people's work into early years learning in April 2022. These encounters helped children understand the world around them, connecting learning with recognisable community roles.
Feelings have a practical means of expression here. In April 2022, early years children used pictures of facial expressions to tell adults how they felt. This gives a child a way to communicate an emotion through an image, alongside spoken language.
Entry includes a planned induction, and the school also plans induction when children change year groups. That makes the first stage of joining a deliberate part of school life. Rainbow Class has a nursery teacher, and families can reach the special educational needs co-ordinator through the office to discuss SEND matters.
Across the school, three staff members have training as designated safeguarding leads. The school asks anyone with a welfare concern to report it immediately. For families, the office provides a contact route to the safeguarding team as well as to SEND support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their intake. Kent County Council coordinates the September main-school intake, with applications made through its school application website.
Planned induction when children move between year groups concerns the educational transition. Keep that separate from securing a place: familiarity with the school does not replace the Reception application.
