At a Glance

Outdoor exploration and learning to talk give Basnett Street its character: children climb, run, build together and practise expressing themselves through play. This is a nursery school in Burnley for children aged 3 to 5, with nursery education as its focus. The Chatterbox Club works alongside it to extend provision, including 16 places offering 30 hours through the partnership.

At the Ofsted inspection on 29 and 30 April 2025, children were happy and settled readily, while many were ready for their next stage in Reception. That gives families a useful picture of the nursery experience, with an important teaching concern to weigh alongside it.

The Nursery Day

Language learning runs through books and play. Adults introduce vocabulary, demonstrate how to use it and revisit words, helping children communicate through gestures, individual words and short sentences. For a child still finding their voice, this makes everyday activities opportunities to practise. In April 2025, children learning English as an additional language received effective support.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum connects learning with children's interests and starting points. In practical parent terms, communication, early mathematics and social and emotional development are part of the learning here. Outside, the nursery's outdoor area gives children space for climbing and exploration. Model building and watering plants involve cooperation: children have reasons to share resources and work together.

Experiences reach beyond classroom activities. Visits from musicians, police officers and builders introduce different jobs; litter picking helps children practise caring for their surroundings. Learning about Christmas, Diwali and Eid introduces different celebrations.

Teaching consistency. In April 2025, some activities lacked a clear focus on the knowledge children needed to gain, limiting their learning. Staff needed better preparation to identify and teach that knowledge across different experiences. For families, the distinction matters: an appealing activity also needs a clear learning purpose.

Care and Support

Settling follows a planned approach. In April 2025, parents valued the help they received, and children learned routines that supported calm classrooms. Adults helped children recognise emotions and manage difficult feelings; children also helped one another with practical tasks such as putting on wellington boots. Care and growing independence work together here.

Healthy snacks accompany milk or water, and children learn why toothbrushing matters both at home and nursery. These routines make health part of the day. The Chatterbox Club also offers a paid Lunch Club.

Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) includes identifying children's needs and choosing activities and resources that let them access the curriculum alongside classmates. The nursery's SEN coordinator oversees provision and liaises with outside agencies. Safeguarding arrangements were effective in April 2025.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate primary-school application through Lancashire County Council's online admissions route. For September 2027 entry, the application deadline is 15 January 2027. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery provision.

Preparation for school and allocation of a school place are different matters. The confidence, communication and independence developed during nursery help children take their next step; they do not secure admission to a chosen primary school.

Practical Information

Basnett Street offers up to 15 hours a week, taken in morning or afternoon sessions. Nursery enquiries go directly to the school; applications are returned with the child's birth certificate and supporting documentation. Contact the office on 01282 457235 or email bursar@basnettstreet.lancs.sch.uk.

For additional care, Chatterbox Club sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am and from 12.40pm to 3.40pm. Its paid Lunch Club runs between 11.45am and 12.40pm. Full-day care for nursery-school children depends on available places. Club fees are paid at the start of each half-term for blocks of weekly sessions, with no refunds for illness, appointments or cancellations. Refer to the school for current charges.
