Once among Lancashire's most prominent mill towns, Burnley at its peak was one of the world's largest producers of cotton cloth, a legacy still visible in the red-brick weaving sheds and mill stacks that punctuate its streets. At the confluence of the River Calder and River Brun in eastern Lancashire, the town holds a market tradition stretching back more than 700 years. Around 78,000 people live here today.

Manchester Road station connects to Manchester Victoria via the Todmorden Curve, restored in 2015, putting the regional city within reach.
