At a Glance

Stories, songs and listening activities give The Little Stars their starting point at Cherry Fold Community Primary School. This is the school's Nursery class on Cog Lane in Burnley, with entry from age three and a choice of morning or afternoon sessions. Its character is rooted in early language: sharing books, noticing sounds and remembering what children hear.

There is an important caution alongside that picture. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Requires improvement at its inspection on 20 and 21 May 2025. That judgement covers early years across the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven areas of development. For parents, that means learning stretches beyond letters and numbers to movement, conversation, relationships, creativity and discovering how the world works. Children have experiences they choose themselves alongside activities directed by adults, giving them different ways to explore a subject.

Books and sound play are concrete features of the nursery day. Children share stories, sing and explore rhymes, then practise listening to sounds around them. These are the foundations for later reading. The early years approach also uses key texts, with staff adapting provision to individual needs. Adults observe how children investigate, persevere and try out their own ideas, so the focus includes how a child learns as well as what they learn.

Outdoor learning draws on the school's grounds and Forest School, which are used for active learning across the school. Indoors, reading spaces in classrooms and around the school give books a physical place in daily life. These are school facilities rather than a promise of a particular nursery timetable.

Learning needs more consolidation. In May 2025, early years activities and materials too often failed to help children revisit new knowledge and practise skills. The curriculum's ambition was not matched consistently by its delivery. For families, the useful question is how an activity helps a child remember and use something they have already been taught.

Care and Support

In May 2025, children across the Nursery and Reception classes were cheerful and self-assured. The nursery has a class teacher, while early years leadership includes a teaching and learning lead and an assistant head whose responsibilities combine EYFS with inclusion and SEND.

For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, early years teaching is adapted around targeted learning plans. Support can be reviewed through pupil progress meetings or an education, health and care plan, with advice from external agencies where appropriate. This gives families a structure for discussing their child's access to learning.

School safeguarding arrangements were effective in May 2025. A designated safeguarding team includes senior leaders and the pupil and family support manager. SEND enquiries can be directed to parents@cherryfold.lancs.sch.uk.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Lancashire County Council's online admissions route in the autumn before their child starts school. The deadline is mid January, with offers finalised in mid April. Treat that application as a separate task even while your child is attending the nursery.

Practical Information

From age three, children are eligible for 15 hours of free childcare. Cherry Fold offers this through either a morning session, 8:45 to 11:45, or an afternoon session, 12:30 to 15:30. Those fixed windows are the practical starting point for planning family routines.

For a nursery application, collect a pack from the school office and bring your child's birth certificate. Applications can be completed before the child turns three to reserve a place. Office staff also help arrange school visits and answer enquiries; telephone 01282426630.
