At a Glance

A sensory learning room and a curriculum that starts with two-year-olds give Rosegrove its early-years focus. This Lancashire maintained nursery school on Havelock Street in Burnley caters for children aged two to five. It shares a federated governing body with Rosegrove Infant School, while retaining its nursery-school identity.

Teachers and teaching assistants develop the learning environment indoors and outside. The nursery aims to shape learning around the child. For families, the emphasis is on these early years themselves, with education beginning before the older nursery year.

The Nursery Day

Language runs through the learning. At the November 2024 inspection, children encountered books, songs and nursery rhymes that extended their vocabulary, while staff adapted activities using their knowledge of each child's development. Learning builds from the two-year-old provision into the Nursery Year: children develop knowledge progressively rather than starting afresh at each stage.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) concerns these first steps in learning and development. Here, the practical emphasis includes communication, cooperation and recognising emotions. Children learn to wait for a turn from the two-year-old stage, giving them ways to participate alongside others.

The Willow Room is described by the nursery as a calm space for sensory learning. Indoor and outdoor environments both form part of the provision. Experiences also reach beyond the nursery: at the November 2024 inspection, children's experiences included visiting local shops and travelling by bus to a nearby farm. Making Christmas cards for care-home residents and collecting food-bank donations gave kindness a practical purpose.

Care and Support

Support includes helping children find words for their feelings. In November 2024, children needing additional help with emotions received support from staff; those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and communication difficulties used resources selected to help them participate in the curriculum. Safeguarding arrangements were effective at that inspection.

Fully qualified teachers and teaching assistants develop the provision. Events across the year bring parents into discussions about learning and celebrate children's achievements, creating opportunities to connect home and nursery learning.

Food has a clear practical arrangement. Lunch Club requires a healthy packed lunch supplied by parents. In November 2024, healthy snacks, milk and water also helped children learn about food and drink choices.

Moving On to Reception

A separate application matters. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. For Rosegrove Infant School, applications go through Lancashire's school admissions portal.

Preparation for primary school is a different question from admission. The nursery curriculum builds knowledge towards children's next stage of education. That educational preparation should not be treated as an entitlement to a place.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Lunch Club spans the interval, from 11.30am to 12.30pm each day, and is open to all nursery children. Book it through the nursery office; charges apply.

Children can start in September, January or April. All children qualify for 15 hours of nursery education from the term following their third birthday. Eligible working parents of three- and four-year-olds can receive another 15 hours, taking the weekly total to 30. Eligible two-year-olds can access a funded 15-hour place from the term after their second birthday; eligible working parents of two-year-olds can access 30 hours of childcare support. Paid sessions and additional hours are also options; contact the school for current charges.
