Nursery at Bury Grammar Schools

A dedicated outdoor play area, an infant gym and access to Forest School give Bury Grammar Schools’ youngest children space to explore beyond their classroom. The nursery, also called Pre-School or Kindergarten, serves children aged three to four within the independent school, with its buildings on Bridge Road in a gated part of the estate.
Children can join from their third birthday. In December 2023, there were two Nursery classes. These sit within the school’s early years provision, so the nursery experience combines its own accommodation with access to facilities across the wider campus.
Reading together and choosing their own play are part of the learning experience. In December 2023, children developed sharing and cooperation through reading time and free play, while learning to manage their emotions and respond to other children. These are practical foundations for taking turns, joining a group and building friendships.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for learning and care. Assessment informs each child’s next learning steps, rather than leaving activities disconnected from their development. The December 2023 ISI inspection found that most early years children achieved well, with developing knowledge and skills in literacy and numeracy.
Large classrooms provide indoor learning space. Outside, the youngest pupils have their own play area, alongside access to Forest School and the school swimming pool. Music rooms and an infant gym add different spaces for activity. Access to these facilities broadens the possible learning environment; it does not establish a fixed timetable of nursery lessons.
Confidence and emotional security were evident in early years in December 2023: children were happy and comfortable with adults, and activities supported both larger movements and finer physical control. Positive approaches to behaviour helped children respond to expectations, making social learning part of daily care.
In December 2023, ISI found that early years staff had been trained in safeguarding and that their safeguarding lead cooperated with the wider school team. Staff training included food hygiene and paediatric first aid. This connects nursery care to the school’s support arrangements.
Lunch can be a school meal or a packed lunch. School meals are optional, nursery lunches require advance payment, and packed lunches are eaten in the Dining Hall. Families therefore have a choice about food alongside the nursery booking.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery families should confirm with Admissions what they need to submit for Reception. Applications use the Application Form, and assessment involves an informal observation by a senior Primary Team member. There is no formal application deadline, but the school advises applying early because of demand.
Staff cooperation between early years and the primary division supported transitions in December 2023. That continuity concerns children’s experience of moving on; it should be kept separate from the decision to offer a place.
For September 2026 to August 2027, Pre-School bookings cover three, four or five days during term time. Holiday Club is charged according to use, with current Pre-School families receiving early booking priority. This lets families choose their term-time attendance pattern and book holiday provision separately.
The 2022 to 2023 arrangements included 30 funded hours for eligible three- and four-year-olds and 15 hours for those who did not qualify. Under those arrangements, funding reduced fees rather than providing a free standalone place. Refer to the school for current charges.
