Books, letter sounds and outdoor discovery give Elton’s nursery its clearest character. Early reading begins in the Nursery Year, while Elton’s Outdoor Learning connects children in the early years with the natural world. These are complementary starting points: getting interested in stories and sounds, and learning through practical experiences outside.
This is the nursery provision within Elton Community Primary School, on Alston Street in Bury. The school’s age range starts at three. In January 2024, Ofsted found that the nursery established positive behaviour through encouraging relationships and familiar routines. For a child beginning school life, that combination matters: learning how to listen and join in accompanies the first steps towards reading.
Reading starts with an interest in books and the sounds associated with letters. Nursery children were enthusiastic about both in January 2024. The emphasis is on building the foundations for later reading, so the nursery’s contribution begins before children start the next stage of formal phonics teaching.
Elton’s Outdoor Learning adds a different kind of exploration. Den construction and making fires feature in the school’s outdoor activities; for children in the early years, this approach develops their understanding of the world. The natural world becomes something to investigate through practical activity. It gives families a concrete picture of how learning extends beyond books.
Familiar routines and adult encouragement shape the nursery’s approach to behaviour. In January 2024, positive relationships and respectful interactions were already established in the Nursery Year. This makes the everyday social side of nursery significant: children are learning how to take part as well as what to learn.
Parents and carers are encouraged to participate in school life and discuss concerns about their child’s education or welfare with staff. That invitation gives families a direct role in raising questions about how their child is getting on.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Bury Council’s normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year.
For the September 2024 intake, applications were made online and the deadline was 15 January 2024. That cycle is past. Its admission criteria covered looked-after children, siblings and distance, rather than nursery attendance. Keep the two decisions separate: choosing the nursery concerns a child’s early experience; obtaining a Reception place requires another application.
